⚜️The wall.⚜️

It shaped the city, its people and life for 28 years. For now it is already longer gone than it was present. Nevertheless, for Berlin visitors it is one of the most interesting chapters of the city. There are many traces and memories of the wall.

The wall once ran like a strip around the former West Berlin.
Today, one no longer notices where the East stopped and the West began. Who e.g. From Kreuzberg to Mitte or from Treptow to Neukölln, the former border hardly noticed.

That's why: look at the ground! The course of the inner-city wall is marked on the streets by a double row of paving stones. She wanders through the city and divides it symbolically.

160 kilometers around and through Berlin the path leads along the course of the former Berlin Wall. The Mauerweg is made for pedestrians and cyclists. To a large extent, it runs on the former "Postenweg" of the GDR border troops, a street for patrols that once led all the way around West Berlin.

At some (few) points the path is interrupted, e.g. because of new buildings. Nevertheless, the path is perfect for a discovery hike or bike ride.

In many places of the Wall Trail there are larger or smaller memorials for the wall.

❗️Shortly after the fall of the Wall over 100 artists painted the Berlin Wall on the Mühlendamm in Friedrichshain. The artworks were restored in the year 2000 again. Today, this 1.3-kilometer-long piece of wall is a listed building and can be viewed from both sides. Between the Mercedes-Benz Arena and the Oberbaumbrücke there is a park on the Spree, which is worthwhile for relaxed sitting on the Spree.❗️

At the Bernauer Straße is the longest surviving section of the Wall with death stripes and watchtower. The death strip lies behind the wall and can not be entered, as it was then. From an observation tower one overlooks the border plant.

Next to it is the museum and the grounds of the Berlin Wall Memorial with many information panels and exhibits on the Berlin Wall and what it meant for Berliners. In addition, there is a memorial for the victims that habe been killed by the attemp to cross this border; the "Mauertoten". Worth seeing!

A piece from the original.
Along the Niederkirchnerstraße, between Martin-Gropius-Bau and the Federal Ministry of Finance, stands a piece of the original Berlin Wall. It is integrated into the terrain of the exhibition Topography of Terror. It shows well how many pieces the Berliners had knocked out of the wall with a hammer and a chisel after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The well-known inner-city checkpoint was Checkpoint Charlie on Friedrichstrasse. Also diplomats and military changed here between East and West. Today, a copy of the control barrack is here again set up. It also includes the house at Checkpoint Charlie with its museum and the panorama of the artist Asisi.

Place of farewell.
The station Friedrichstraße was such a curiosity in Berlin: In the area of East Berlin it was an interchange station for the West Berlin lines of the underground and S-Bahn. Besides, here was a border crossing. In their own building they traveled from the DDR to Berlin (West): Since there was no freedom of travel in the DDR, they often said goodbye in tears.

Even today, this hall bears the name Tears Palace. In it the exhibition "everyday life of the German division" can be visited, the entrance is free.

Have a nice day, my dears.

Great post! I have been in Berlin, I saw the Wall, been in Checkpoint Charlie and in Topography of Terror. What an experience!

Nice that you like the article.

Once i was in Berlin, i have bought a souvenir for myself from a gift shop. It was a piece of stone of the fallen wall. It still makes me feel excited even i am not sure if it is really a part from the wall. @city-of-berlin do you think that i was cheated by the gift shop? :)

It's unbelievable what happened at the time. This story behind suffering and love.I do not think you were cheated.Rejoice over your souvenir it's a part of history :)

My wife is born in Germany and has a lot of photos in front of the wall before it has fallen, told me the stories about the wall a lot. I must confess that i am jealous of her.

Why jealous? :)

Because she has much more than a piece of souvenir (i have only that) about the wall...

That's true. But she shares her memory with you😊😉

Yes, sharing makes sense as well :)

Yes :)

Cool painting

I agree😊

Nice depiction

Many Thanks :).
