Queen Spotting Anyone?
I love these beekeepers puzzles. Some people have a natural ability to quickly find a queen bee, others have to hunt for a long time.
The first one is as easy as they get. See how her abdomen is long and golden? She is a real beauty. I caught her in a swarm from a feral colony, so she is probably one year old.
This puzzle is really hard. You might have to download the image and zoom in. If you can't find her, try skipping to the next photo and then come back to this one.
This one is pretty easy. The queen moves quickly across the comb and the workers move out of her way so there is often a empty spot in her wake. It is one of the tricks that expert queen spotters use.

I just keep staring but can't see her.. It's like million bees that look the same so it's difficult to spot the difference :)
Did they ever bite you? I guess so as you're touching them with your bare hands :)

Here is a cropped version of the first picture. Her thorax is dark and shiny because she is much older than the workers taking care of her. They are born fuzzy but the hairs rub off over time. Her most distinguishing feature is her long abdomen that sticks out well past the tips of her wings.
Bees don't bite to defend themselves, they sting. The workers can sting once then they die so they only sting if they have to. Sometimes they sting me, but the mood of the hive was good today. The nice weather and blooming plants makes them happy.

Do you think that they know that when they sting they will die? I wonder if they understand this..
I doubt they understand anything the way that we do. Insects probably don't have a good mental picture of what will happen in the future.
