I guess I am a Beerologist!

I have had my head down this week with lots of dad stuff, training a little, and hammering out some business. I was peaking at my phone photos thinking that your Weekly Zekely (https://steemit.com/ulog/@zekepickleman/ulog-33-your-weekly-zekely) might end up being boring as hell this week as a result.

One accomplishment I made was landing a big deal with.......another brewery.

You don't have to delve back too far in my blog to find content on the Golden Goodness, and long time followers will recall reviews and stories from all the breweries who are clients of mine. Basically, I am in the business of supporting the technology that supports small to medium businesses and have a penchant for beer. I help them build the brewery, and then get to spend some of the money I make from the deal back at the brewery and become a VIP there for more than just being a pisstank! It is like a match made in heaven.

Brewing is an age old process and the technology has come a long way, but is mainly in the hands of the brewers. The technology of running a brewery like a modern business has come a long way and has become essential as competition is popping up everywhere. When you add valuable solutions and functionality to the technology that runs the business, you also add layers of abstraction and potentially a mess of vendors. Not when you are dealing with Zeke.

I started out specializing in Point of Sale solutions:

When you can manage everything from sales to costs and people with a single solution that dishes you reports to run your business and it comes in the form of an iPad, that's a pretty compelling solution for a brewery.

Then came time for wiring:

I can run a damn wire, put ends on it and terminate in in a damn patch panel! Might as well be me making money doing it properly, and getting my hands dirty pulling CAT6 through old buildings while renovations are going on and the rest of the brewing equipment is being set up.

Then moved onto more advanced networking:

When you look at the technology that should be leveraged by a brewery, here are the top few:

  • Guest internet network for social media and client satisfaction
  • IP cameras to monitor the business operation
  • IP speakers and music systems to provide some personality and ambiance
  • Other smart monitoring and management systems with internet-based/mobile applications

There is not much money in hardware, nor has there ever been in the majority of my experience. There IS money, however, in becoming the sole source of hardware, services and consulting on route to becoming the go-to guy for technology.

In addition to the technical specialization, followers of my blog will probably notice that I have a passion for beer itself, and a few know I brewed my own beer with friends for well over 10 years. Makes sense to do business with people you enjoy interacting with, and who will become one of your main customers!

As mentioned, we received the cheque to start ordering and planning the implementation of the next brewery this week. Now that I seem to have become a blogger because of this application, block chain and community, I should be documenting this as it is such a neat journey as I have come to notice. To celebrate, I hit up another client for a growler of their finest IPA I am sipping on right now.

There are all probably reasons I am now working on opening/supporting my 6th brewery. They are also collectively why I have come to the revelation that Zeke is, indeed, the STEEMit Beerologist.

Ha! Hope you get contracts with wine companies too... just saying...

It is true! There are literally 100 wineries in my province yet they are about 90 minutes away. Beer is a little closer to home and less geographically dependent for now.

It sounds like you are doing pretty well in business.
Good for you. If I were to open a brewery, you would be my go to guy. Not only for the tech. end of it, you would be my taste tester. Of course the tech. stuff would need to be completed before the tasting started, for obvious reasons.

All kidding aside, I don't know how long you have worked for yourself, but doing something for a living that you enjoy provides the extra motivation needed to be successful as a small business owner!
Good Luck with all of your business adventures.

Ah thanks!

I have been in transition and working like mad to build a business full time for the last few years. 20 years in high-tech account management and big city life taught me lots and now I have carpet bagged to a smaller town in search of an interesting family life.

Business ownership is a bit of a slog but any progress you make is for yourself and not someone else which is as nice as the freedom. I didn't even realize the specialization I am building til I looked back on the big cheque (check) this week and how involved I am above and beyond my addiction for beer!

This is an awesome backstory. I’m jealous I’ve been looking for opportunities to make money off the brewing boom and I never thought of going the IT route.
