I have tried a few Christmas/winter spiced beers and many have been okay. Some better than others. I think the amount, and type, of spices used affects the flavor and drink-ability greatly. A lower ABV might help as well, keeping the focus on the beer and it's flavor instead of on how powerful a kick it can give.
