Society & Solitude #2 - Hill Farmstead

Beer Review

Society & Solitude #2 is an 9.5% Imperial Black IPA brewed by Hill Farmstead in Greensboro Bend, Vermont. The Hill Farmstead is a revival of tradition that went back over 200 years. In 2010, Shaun Hill brewed the first batch of 'Edward' at what now became Hill Farmstead brewery. It was in the spirit of heritage that Hill Farmstead was launched, to create craft brews just like the Hill family did for centuries in North Greensboro, Vermont. I stopped by the Hill Farmstead on my way home from Jay Peak a couple weeks ago. It was located on a farm atop a hill. The brewery and tap room were clean and impressive... and the beer was delicious!

The Can

The can of the Society & Solitude #2 features the Hill Farmstead logo. The logo for Hill Farmstead was retrieved from a sign that once hung in Aaron Hill's (the owner's great(x3) grandfather) tavern in the early 1800's. It reminds me of a beer within an hour glass, which makes me think there is always time for beer. On the backside of the can is the following paragraph:

Hill Farmstead Brewery is the culmination of travel and insight, of friendships and explorations, and of realizing a sense of one’s place. Upon the hand hewn land of our forebears, we honor eight generations of Greensboro ancestry by thoughtfully engaging with our heritage and with our distinctive beers. This offering is our effort to revive, diversify and prolong the memory of the Hill Farmstead.

The Beer

Society & Solitude #2 is an Imperial Black Ale made in the spirit of James (according to the website). It is brewed with Simcoe and Columbus hops. This was the first time I ever tried a Black IPA and I thought it was interesting. I got a slight taste of chocolate mocha and roast coffee as if it were a stout or a porter, but at the same time the beer retained the fizzy, hoppy taste of a typical IPA. It was a fresh and delicious beer that went down very easy at 9.5% alc/vol. I look forward to trying more offerings from the Hill Farmstead in the future!

Hi, Jeff, how are you?
Can I drink a beer with you? :D

I am good and you?

Of course, what's your favorite kind?!

I had a tiring week and I am waiting for the weekend to get some rest.

In Romania we have a very tasty beer called Ursus, it's my favorite. If you have the opportunity to visit Romania you have to try it. What is your favorite beer?

I don't know if I have a single favorite...
but this was one of the best for sure:

Never had this one before, nor have I seen a can. Will have to seek it out and try it. Big fan of all imperial stouts, especially coffee stouts.

Hope it was enjoyable.

@jeffjagoe - I have been noticing a tendency toward coffee flavoured brews!? Choose your poison bro!

A little caffeine in the beer never hurt anyone ;)

Taste of chocolate mocha and roast coffee , just want to taste it can i have some :P
