If This Beer Was a Woman - My Antonia by Birra del Borgo

Hello everyone, this post will be a departure from my traditional solo beer reviews. During the week, I visited my friend Aga @agniese in her tiny rooftop flat where we drank Italian craft beer while talking about beery and non-beery topics. The brew that we had was the Imperial Pils My Antonia by Birra del Borgo. You may remember that I was quite disappointed after my first encounter with Birra del Borgo and their ReAle Extra, so I kind of had mixed expectations about My Antonia.

Interesting fact - Aga's boyfriend is an Italian guy called Antonio

Aga's flat was hipsterish and cozy, which not only contributed to the photography part but also the whole experience of drinking beer. You see, she didn't have any beer glasses (or glasses for that matter). We had to drink from a couple of recycled jam jars, and that was seriously cool as they made the beer look delightfully tempting.

My Antonia by Birra del Borgo ~ 330 ml ~ 3.30€ ~ Alc/Vol 7.5%

Dreaming of you, Antonia.

Opening beer like a boss (using a lighter).

My Antonia poured honey yellow with a nice creamy white head. It almost looked like honey in a jar. At that point, I was super eager to pour one myself, but I had to ask Aga a couple of questions before doing that.

P1140143.jpg

Ready? How does it smell?
P1140145.jpg

It smells fruity, but there's also something else, which I am not able to recognize right now.

Okay, and what does it taste like?
P1140151.jpg

It's citrusy bitter and refreshing. I like it a lot - it's my type of beer! It's also a bit spicy in the aftertaste.

I am taking notes.
P1140179.jpg

All right, I completely agreed with Aga - the smell was a delicious blend of grapefruit, citrus pith, hops, and malt. There was also a hint of grass. Unlike the ReAle Extra, which I had a couple of weeks ago, My Antonia felt much smoother in the mouth. The taste was again grapefruity, with a bitter, long-lasting (and a bit spicy) aftertaste. The creamy head was lovingly caressing my lips, making me crave for another sip.

Despite being cold outside, My Antonia was super refreshing, and we thoroughly enjoyed it! It, therefore, earns an excellent score of 4.5 out of 5 stars - highly recommended!

It was about time to ask Aga the ultimate question: If this beer was a woman, she would be... natural, without any makeup and fancy hairdos. She would be a hippie, young and fresh in spirit, from the southern parts of Europe.

Love the bottle. And Aga's ring! 😄 I'm now following you, @agniese. And I found this post very engaging.

Thanks @outrayjust :) I'm following you too! We had loads of fun with @irreverent-dan, so happy to hear that you enjoy it as well ;) And the ring is an old memory of my grandmother who purchased it in Moscow in 60's, so it is very special to me :)

I totally suspected it was a vintage Russian piece! I'm a bit of a jewelry/gem freak, which explains why that would be my take-away from a beer post ;-D I've been collecting "rocks" of all sorts since I was a kid (thanks to my scientist dad). Now I'm more partial to "big girl" rocks.

That is a very special and magical memory indeed!

Haha, I had no idea that her ring was that old :) I am glad that you liked the post @outrayjust - it was much more interesting than drinking beer alone.

I'm not sure how to respond to that :-D

Wonderful review! I am waiting for St. Stefanus review!

I love blonde beer. Lately, I'm in a love/hate relationship with Paulaner white beer. Gotta get past this Christmas as a couple, though.

Cheers, Dan!

Thank you, my friend! Why is it that you sometimes hate the Paulaner? :) Cheers and Merry Xmas!

I love this post - it's everything beer should be, not pretentious, enjoyed with friends - fantastic

Thank you, @harveyword! I wish I could have a beer with you one day :)

What I would give to try this!! But, correct me if I'm wrong, Italy doesn't have a big beer tradition does it? I thought It would me more of a South/West European thing!!
Also, 7,5%?? Thats heavy damn 😁
Cheers mate

Indeed, I've never identified Italy with beer but with wine, obviously. Actually, except "Peroni" I hadn't tried Italian beer before - as a Pole I was a bit skeptical ;) But "My Antonia" is a great, positive surprise and yeap, I can confirm, it's kinda strong ;)

Italy actually has a fantastic craft beer scene, it is very localised though so not too much gets out into the wider world.

That puts Italy in the same boat as Australia then :-)

Yep! I come from a country where we make a lot of both!! (Portugal) but would love to try that (it even has my name as well hehe - Antonia)
Cheers mate!!

If it comes to Portugal (I used to live there) again, I'm more into Portuguese wine than beer. Basically, from your country, I know only Sagres and Super Bock. But I admit, it can be my ignorance ;)

I think everybodies more into our wine than anything else of ours hahah I live in Oporto, so i can be a little biased haha Port wine all the way ❤️
I hope you enjoyed your time here!!
Cheers mate 😄

Porto, honestly, is one of my favorites cities. I spent there most of my time and genuinely enjoyed :) Saúde!

7.5% is nothing compared to the 10% (and above) monsters that I drink from time to time :-) Thanks for your comment @whynotas and cheers!

Are tou talking about those craazy Belgian brews??? Those are just killers haha
It's my pleasure mate!!
Cheers 😄

Not only, there are also some super strong Danish and Norwegian brews for example :)

Forgot about those! You are absolutely right!!
Ill just go straight to the scotch hahaha
Cheers mate!!

Nice color to it. Great photos :)

There are a few bars I went to in Wisconsin, USA, that used to serve beer in Mason jars, but I've not seen jam jars used before.

Thank you! I have only seen cocktails served in Mason jars :)

Thank you for your donation to @SchoolForSDG4 . Though the beer looks yummy honey but I can realize from 7th picture how difficult it would be for new drinker.
Have great weekend

You are welcome, my friend! The payout of this post will be much better, so that's a good thing :) Sometimes, it could be also difficult for experienced beer drinkers like me - I don't have the best sense of smell :)

You too have a great week ahead!

Love the "if this beer was a woman" comparison!! photos are great as well per usual. Followed @agniese! Can't wait to see her photos in my feed

Thank you, Chrissy! Sorry that I have missed your latest posts - haven't been super active lately. I am going to read them now :)

This is a fantastic review, I love the photoshoot. A nice departure from your usual (and perfectly decent) reviews. :)

Thank you @mazzle, I am glad that you liked it! I hope that I will have the chance to do again such duo review in the future. It all depends on whether I will find a fellow beer-loving model :) Cheers!

Have you ever tasted the "Old Antonia"? It is an Imperial Ipa version of the My Antonia, 10° alc.
I love it!
Great post :D

Hey Cat-In-A-Box I don't think they had that one in the beer shop, but I am going to ask them next time :) Thank you!

It's worth it, the Old Antonia is Aged in Calvados Domaine Dupont casks! (:
I tasted that beer almost 5 years ago and I can still remember it was such a unique flavor!
Thank you for sharing your story, if you pass by Rome one day, it would be great to have a tasting together! :D

Cheers!
.TheCatInTheBox.

Mmm, this sounds like a brew to look for next time when I am in Italy, and if it happens that I am in Rome, I would be happy to have a beer with you :) Thanks for your comment and cheers! 🍻
