Beer Review: Upslope Special Release Milk Stout

Another dark beer review coming right up from the beers my buddy Cody picked up for me in Missoula at the Big Heads Bottle Shop, probably the best selection in the state. A special series by Upslope Brewing called the Tap Room series. Limited release in December 2017.

  • Brewery: Upslope Brewing - Boulder, Colorado
  • Alcohol Content: 4.8% by volume
  • IBUs: 22
  • Company Description: Mexican Chocolate Milk Stout is a 4.8 percent ABV milk stout brewed with chocolate, cinnamon and almond extract. It is the latest release in the Boulder, Colo.-based brewery’s Tap Room Series, which consists of tap room exclusive beers that are packaged for the masses.

Presentation
The Taproom series of beers are all in 19.2 oz cans with plain white and gray graphics with Upslopes logo shape and all ingredients and specs listed on the front, and additional information on the side and back. The generic look is supposed to lend to the "taproom" idea in my opinion. Upslope beers come in either the 12 oz cans of the larger 19.2 oz. I have never seen any bottles from Upslope.

The Beer

  • Appearance: Another dark dark beer with a moderate khaki foam head on the pour which dissipated relatively quickly.
  • Aroma: Hints of cinnamon and coffee were what I noticed.
  • Taste: The taste was not exactly what you would expect from a chocolate milk stout but it was pleasing, the nuttiness from the almond extract was noticeable, with the stronger coffee and dark chocolate flavors and a bit sweet. It wasn't really bitter but the dark chocolate lended to the taste of bitterness.
  • Mouthfeel: Pretty smooth in the mouth with coffee and dark chocolate finish, sweet also.
  • Drinkability: I took my time drinking this beer, it is relatively low in abv but still was thick and rich so it is a beer to savor the various tastes and flavors present.

Rating and Final Thoughts

I gave this a 4.25 rating on Untapped where one friend rated it a 4.0 and it had an overall rating of 3.71 with a small sampling size of 280 souls. Again, you mix coffee and chocolate in a milk stout and I am a fan just from the name. This one had some unique tastes of cinnamon and almond nuttiness but was also sweet and had a coffee and dark chocolate taste. An other winner I seem to be hitting lately.

4.25/5

This post will make it to #BeerSaturday so if you do enjoy my review, go check the Week 38 contest out and give it a vote over there also. Please feel free to comment and give me a follow. I will be adding a lot more beer reviews in the future. Thanks and Cheers!

Big heads bottle shop is great. We get our brewing supplies from Summer Sun and I always sneak in there to peruse the selection.

Do you live in Missoula? I had a friend pick me up some beers when he was there a week ago. My son lives there also and he is a big steemit guy, @jakeybrown.

Yep, Lolo area. We recently joined up and are still finding our niche and communities here.

I guess I’m surprised you found me, I live in Great Falls and post a lot of beer reviews, you must do some Brewing?

Yep, a little brewing and we enjoy local breweries when traveling. I noticed one of your beersaturday posts and followed. Always nice to find another MT person. Our families are up in GF so we visit there every few months.

Agree about finding another Montana person. I started following you so I will be watching for your posts about beer for sure. What are your families names here? Wonder if I know anyone? Im Rob Brown

The Keith family. There is a gas station on 10th that my husband's Uncle owns. And you might know Huntsberger from my Mom's family. You might follow @lordvdr to see my husbands beer posts. He is brewing something today. :(

Interesting, correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t the Keith’s originally from Chester? Which is where I’m from, they were older than me but I knew who they were. I started following your husband, maybe he would do the same to me.

4.25s all over the place! I have had an upslope beer I am sure. That looks quite good. Dark beers all the way!

Yes indeed, dark beers rule. You missed my 4.5 rated dark beer though, just a few posts below this one. Another dark chocolate porter. it was the best of the bunch. you should look at that one also

Nice. Just added to my untapped wish list!

that is awesome, glad to see my review was useful to someone! Hope you can find one.

Good run of beers lately, all dark, no wonder

yes, thanks to Cody Koontz who picked up a bunch of beers that I was able to identify from Big Head Bottle Shop last weekend. Thanks to BHBS for posting all their beers on Untappd. Worked out pretty well.
