Beer Tasting - American Pale Ale ('Barba Pale Ale' by LAB Split)
No better time to see STEEM going up than during your vacation. This is how my first day at the coast looked like. Beer story included!
No sooner had I arrived to Split than I started to think how awesome it would be if I found a homey local craft bar.
Some grilling in the scalding summer sun and a few wrong turns in the historic city center and there it was. We looked ourselves squarely in the eye. Leopold.
Leopold Craft Pub.
The waiter snoozed in the shade. He approached and with thick Dalamtian accent asked what will it be. Stumped after a 5 hour doze in the bus I delegated the responsibility back to him.
Why not try a local craft beer? Hell yeah! I jumped a bit off my stool and grabbed my new phone to start flicking photos. He seemed like he couldn’t care less about whatever is happening around him. Dalamtians are always carefree and absent minded. They can’t get enough of tourists. Why would they give a fuck!?
We stayed on the porch but inside looks charming too!
@ssekulji kept me company and good company it was. He wants his beer as watery as possible. However much I tried, he is satisfied with camel piss. So be it. To each his own.
Later that day we went for a swim and noticed sky turned to Mordor colors.
A fire!
We survived the night by staying indoors. After some severe swearing for having to spend the night in an apartment I dozed off after a few beers. I had to drink macros. Don’t tell anyone.

LAB Barba Pale Ale by LAB Split
Style | American Pale Ale |
Country | Split, Croatia |
Alcohol | 5.4% |
----- | --------- |
Appearance | Light orange yellow. Slightly hazy. Pillowy head. Label is a firm confirmation I am indeed in Split. |
Aroma | Grassy. Smells a bit like weed which I have, of course, never tried. Hoppy. A bit of ash. Very promising aroma. Smells like summer. |
Taste | Slight bitterness. Lightly salty. Balanced taste. Good. Yummie! An oddity in the sea of averages. |
Palate | Watery and quite heavy carbonation. At the same time gentle and soothing. |
----- | --------- |
Overall | Perfect for staring at the sea. It is LAB. It is Split. If you are here and you don’t try it you are a cunt and there is no way around it. |
Score (subjective, personal) | 17/20 |
Price: 25 kuna (3.90$) for 0.5l. On tap at a pub. Medium range since they frequently sell macro for the same price. A travesty.

Have you heard about ULTRA Europe festival?
It just happened in Split, Croatia
Leopold's looks excellent!! I did laugh at the satisfied with camel piss comment!!
Another great review. I want to know what happened with the giant fire though! Lol
Great post as always! You always manage to keep the things simple, but in the same time complete and interesting. I'm planning an excursion now. Going to Dubrovnik for a day or two on my way to Czech republic, so I'm very excited now.
Cheers!
Definitively send some photos of the old fort! They filmed Game of Thrones there!
Of course lots of photos! I will prepare my camera and phone.
I am considering now... when I come to Croatia I could get one of my homebrews and send it to you somehow... maybe postal service? I have a very good Belgian strong ale with blueberries in secondary! It's about 7 months old now and tastes great!

Thank you! I will look into it as soon as possible!
My dog is also trained to test beer. lolz
Amazing! Thanks
Macros!!! The shame! Lol. I have a friend that also refuses to drink anything but the most watery beers...drives me crazy. Says it is so he can drink 30 of them and still not be drunk...
Hello please kindly like my post too thanks
