Here's an easy, inexpensive recipe to make your own Vitamin C with Hyaluronic acid serum.

And for the men out there - this is great for your skin too. Also, if you want to score points with your wife or girlfriend mix them up a batch and give as a nice surprise gift. Just an idea.

This is a base recipe and you can add essential oils or other things as you like.

I prefer to make my own because:

  1. I know exactly which ingredients it contains = non-toxic
  2. It's mixed fresh so no worries about the quality degrading over time
  3. It's inexpensive

Topical Vitamin C is said to be anti-aging because of it's strong antioxidant properties. It brightens the skin and helps with collagen synthesis which can minimize the fine line and wrinkles. It's an ingredient you will often see in cosmetic products along with hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic Acid draws moisture to the skin. It helps hydrate and plump the skin. It's also the stuff in those fancy fillers they inject.

The Recipe for Vitamin C with Hyaluronic Acid Serum

This recipe makes about 2oz of serum.

3 Tbs water - filtered and previously boiled (powder dissolves better if the water is warm (not hot))

1 Tbs vitamin C powder

1 tsp Hyaluronic acid

1 tsp glycerine Depending on how you like your "serum" to feel you can adjust the glycerine to be more or less. Some recipes call for Aloe Vera in place of the glycerine.

Dark Glass Bottles I like these pretty blue ones with the eyedroppers.

Other ingredients you can add to customize your serum:
Essential oils like lavender, frankincense or myrrh.
Vitamin E oil

Directions:

  1. Measure water into a small glass container
  2. add vitamin C powder - Stir until clear
  3. add hyaluronic acid powder - stir until clear
  4. add glycerine and other ingredients (if using 5-10 drops of essential oil and up to 1/4 tsp of Vitamin E oil)
  5. Using a funnel transfer into dark glass bottles. You can also wrap the bottles with tin foil to make them more light proof, as light will degrade the Vitamin C.

When the serum starts to turn brown it has oxidized and gone bad. Throw it out and start again.

Use morning and night after cleansing. You may feel a burning/tingling sensation when you first start using the serum. This is normal and just lets you know the Vitamin C is working.

If you experience irritation add an extra TBS of water to dilute the serum. If it is still irritating just add more water. Over time your skin will adjust and you can try using less water to make the serum stronger.

Play with your recipe to get it just how you like it.

CAUTION: I do not recommend using more Vitamin C than this recipe calls for as it can irritate and burn the skin.

Thank you for this! How is it for sensitive skin? I'm trying to find a new serum but so many of them irritate my skin and create even more dry skin :( Would I use a little less Vitamin C?

Hi Mallory! The recipe above is a full strength vitamin C. If you have sensitive skin I would suggest starting with only 1 tsp Vitamin C - once you've gone through one batch, if your skin responded well then add another tsp (for a total of 2 tsp) the next batch. If you're still ok after that (and the skin does get "used to" the vitamin C) then you can go with the full tablespoon.

You may also want to add the aloe vera instead of the glycerine as it has it's own soothing properties. You could even replace some of the water with aloe.

The Hyaluronic acid will pull moisture to your skin so that component should help you as well.

Play around with it and you'll be sure to find a balance that works for your skin.

Thanks for stopping by and do come back and let me know how it worked!

Thank you! For dry sensitive skin I imagine I should start with 1tsp Vitamin C as well.

Yes! Always better to start with a lower strength and work your way up.

Buying the raw ingredients is great because 1)you can customize to your needs and 2) there’s enough to make many, many batches.
