A Walk in the Walled City - Beautiful Sunday

My Share for #BeautifulSunday initiated by @ace108

Within Manila there is a walled city dating back from the Spanish colonial era. Rich with history, architecture and relics from the past called Intramuros. A beautiful place to spend a weekend along with tourists and locals. Join us today for a walk around the walls of this historic city.

A Walk in the Walled City

1.JPG

A beautiful morning is always a welcoming sight looking from inside the walled city. A fortified area surrounded by walls over looking a golf course and viewing the skyscrapers of Manila.

2.JPG

Looking at the thick walls makes you imagine battles fought from the past in defense against invaders. A lot of structures were destroyed due to battles that occurred from the past. As time went by repairs and reconstructions were do to bring back the old glory of the walled city.

Now a major tourist destination in Manila the place offers tours guided by locals around the city. Restaurants, night life, historic tours or just simply walk around the city which is an amazing experience.

Have a beer at a local bar and meet amazing people. If that is not your thing you could rent a bike and go on a bike tour. The bikes that they have here is quite unique as they are made of bamboo.

6.JPG

If pedaling is out of the question you could rent a horse draw local carriage. Just like the ride in the old days it will take you around the city. Going around tourist spots as the driver give you a brief history of the places you will visit.

7.JPG

What is quite amazing even the stores here are made to look like from the colonial era. I guess I could say "Adapting to the old ways".

8.JPG

No bikes or carriage for us as we wanted to go around on foot to get the full experience. We wanted to follow the trail that goes around the walls of the city. Excellent work on restoration and maintaining the place as I could barely see rubbish in this area.

9.JPG

Here are just some of the old buildings and structure that we encountered along the way. It is sad to know that a lot of structures were destroyed during the Battle of Manila. Only 5% of the buildings survived architecture and history that we will never see forever.

We saw a gallery of the past presidents of the Philippines as we went on our stroll.

13.JPG

It was a long walk ahead but somehow we were enjoying our stroll and had bottled water with us to keep us hydrated.

14.JPG

Even though they are just old stone structures it is such a refreshing site to see. This definitely beats looking at the office cubicle 5 days a week.

15.JPG

16.JPG

This place was occupied by the Japanese during World War II and here they took the last stand as the Americans liberated the city. A Japanese cannon still stands, a remnant from the past and tells us that war only leaves destruction and sorrow.

17.JPG

18.JPG

There is still so much to see but the kids are tired from the long walk. Therefore we must end the stroll for the day.

19.JPG

As we head back we passed by the building of the second oldest newspaper company in the country. Dating back from 1900's the Manila Bulletin was owned by a Swiss but now owned by a Filipino Chinese.

20.JPG

To end this walk we took a closer look on some canons which are strategically placed on the walls. These canons must have been a force to reckon with in defense of the walled city. Worn out and battled scarred they serve as reminder of the rich history of our country.
