A fall walk on the Indianapolis Water Canal

in #beautifulsunday7 years ago (edited)

Hubby and I finally got a day off that we could enjoy. Even though its a frigid Thirty-Three Degrees Fahrenheit day, we decided to go for a long walk on the beautiful water canal. It's located in downtown Indianapolis.

We got on the canal where our 9-11 Monument is at. Our city received beams from the actual Twin Towers. The bronze eagle on top of the closest beam faces east towards New York.

It is a sad but needed reminder to mankind. I hope that day is never forgotten.

There are so many beautiful things to see on the canal. I never feel like I've been there too many times.

I had not noticed before that they have maps up of the canal, I assume they are new.

We ventured off of the canal and into downtown but it didn't last long. I did snap a few photo's though. One of these days, we'll have to take you for a walk through downtown. We have some beautiful buildings there.

The sun even tried to peek out at us about this time but it wasn't out for long.

I'm not going to lie, we were pretty chilly at this point and we thought about going back to the car. We decided to push forward though and got back on the canal. We figured walking would keep us warm enough. I'm glad we did too because I always like to see all of the canal when we go.

The canal is also home to our USS Indianapolis Memorial. It sunk in 1945 during World War II. There was an estimated 1,200 sailors on board but only 317 of them survived.

Even though I am not a winter person, I do find myself loving fall. I know its the beautiful colors that come out this time of year that pull me in.

I didn't expect to see much potted plant life looking lively but we did see some that seemed to be hanging on. Hubby and I laughed because they look a bit like lettuces. And they could have been as far as we know. lol

I know you want a closer look at that water feature and the fish that live below it. :)

I'm thinking @old-guy-photos must have walked by here because these don't belong in the city and I didn't see any trees that might have them close by... Paul, have you been in my neck of the woods? :P

I took these last few photographs as our walk came to an end. We were happy we went but we were also happy to return to our warm car. :D

What a beautiful place. The 9-11 monument is a very special, touching tribute to see. Thanks for sharing that moment...The canal is wonderful for a walk, especially on the warmer days. Love the pics. Lol I always call those plants the cabbage plants

I love walking it in the summer. They always have beautiful flowers and water features along the way.

Yeah, the word cabbage came to mind when I seen those too. lol

Looks like it was a great time..thanks for bringing us along = )

Thanks, it was an enjoyable way to spend our afternoon. :D

Yes never forget 9/11! Ive never seen the canal area there. I really think they have done a nice job!

Oh I LOVE that USS Indianapolis Memorial!! Ive read books about that ship. They had just delivered stuff for the atomic bomb. Many of those guys died in the water from lack of drinking water and sharks. Just horrible.

OMG I have been looking all over for my pine cones lol!

Glad to see you join in the beautifulsunday fun! This was a super fun post! Resteemed!

If you ever make it this way, the canal is worth a walk. And its free, not much of that now days. :) Thanks!

Very cool. I graduated from Tech in '93 and DePauw in '97. Haven't been back to Indiana in a really long time. Nice to see some old sights.

I was a Howe kid & graduated in 87. :) I'm glad you enjoyed it, they did a really good job on the canal. I can't remember how many years its been the way it is though.

I remember walking it, but it definitely looks different. We lived in the Old Northside, so I spent a lot of time there and also causing trouble downtown. My parents moved back south in probably 01 or 02, so I just haven't been back. I do remember those cold, sunless winters!

I lived near Sherman & Washington back in the day. I didn't make it downtown much then. It certainly is sunless winters for sure and I dread it coming. Maybe one of these days I'll smarten up & move. lol

Well, it has its charms and some incredible people, but I couldn't handle the depression of gray. I'm in solar now, and I have friends there considering it, and I just wonder how many panels you need to make anything happen in winter.

I bet it would take a lot in the winter. I don't know anyone that uses solar here myself. I am sure there are a few around though.

Nice walk on a #beautifulsunday. The map of the canal does look new.
Even the wall it's mounted on looks new.

Thanks ace108! I know the canal was re-vamped some years ago. I'm just not sure what year. I think the maps are maybe as new as this year though.
