Beach Wednesday - Binalong Bay (Bay of Fires)

This is the view from the small town of Binalong Bay on Tasmania's east coast. This marks the southern end of the area known as the Bay of Fires. The Bay of Fires extends north to Anson's Bay. The beaches here are pristine with white sands. There is very little development in the area so behind the beaches is just heath land and coastal scrub. The granite rocks along the coast are covered in beautiful orange-red lichens. You will read on many web sites that the name "Bay of Fires" was chosen due to the colour of these lichens but this was not the case. The area was named in 1773 by by Tobias Furneaux, Captain of the ship Resolution, who could see the camp fires of the indigenous Tasmanians all along the coast.
