Steem Basic Income is on Discord!

Steem Basic Income

Steem Basic Income is a social experiment to bring a basic income to as many Steemians as possible. Members join by sponsoring others into the program. Steem Basic Income is delivered through providing regular upvotes to member content.

We're on Discord

We definitely don't want to run our own Discord Server! Doesn't Steem have enough of those already? But @earthnation graciously invited us to create a channel within their server that we can invite our members into. Come in, introduce yourself, talk about what basic income means to you, ask for help (I even show up sometimes!), get to know each other. Please be respectful of @earthnation's guidelines for their other channels.

Basic Income Resources

A couple of months ago, @scottsantens put together a comprehensive link library of resources on basic income. It's structured as an FAQ, but each question is a hyperlink to a resource that addresses that question. He kindly shared it with me earlier this week. I think it's a great resource, and I will start working my way through it and occasionally will share specific resources from it, with my own perspective. If you want to learn more about Universal Basic Income, you don't have to wait... you can start digging into the resources now!

Since @scottsantens is something of an expert on basic income, we are grateful to have his participation in our own little experiment.

Delegation Bonus Shares

Existing members can receive bonus shares from delegation. For every 25 SP delegated to @steembasicincome, members will receive 1 bonus share. These bonus shares will be removed if the delegation is withdrawn. Currently each share receives a weekly voting weight of roughly 5.61%.

To simplify the tracking, all members should delegate to @steembasicincome. If the delegating member is not in pool 1, their delegation to @steembasicincome will be added to the delegation sent by @steembasicincome to the pool they are actually in.

These bonus shares will be counted before the bonus shares from upvoting @steembasicincome. So if you have 1 share, received 4 bonus shares from delegation of 100 SP, and then upvoted @steembasicincome regularly, you could potentially receive upvote weight equivalent to 10 shares instead of only 1!

Any Steemian that is already enrolled in @steembasicincome can delegate as much as they would like, to receive bonus shares. If you are not already a member but would like to delegate, please send an enrollment transaction to @steembasicincome and we will add your bonus shares at the time we process your enrollment.

We appreciate the members that take us up on this, and will provide updates highlighting our member-provided delegation, so that you will know who to thank.

Let's look briefly at our current delegation sources.

Sounds intriguing... How do I sign up?

Send 1 STEEM to @steembasicincome. Include the name of who you want to sponsor in the comments. You and the person you sponsor will each receive shares in the program.

Questions?

We broke down the mechanics for how the program works in the newly updated complete overview. If you still have any questions, ask away in the comments section!

Thanks for the mention and recommendation of my FAQ! I hope it helps inform those taking part here in this experiment on Steemit to the wide scope of the idea itself.

You're welcome! We hope to raise awareness of UBI in general, not just our little program.

discord link didnt work for me, down to help how i can but seems like have to read some about what to do

Btw, thanks for the information. Sir, how to get me to be like they get a lot of reward bonus how?

The bonus shares in the table are rewarded directly for the delegation shown in the table. As explained in the post, each 25 SP delegated rewards the participant with 1 bonus share.

Dear @steembasicincome. I have had a discussion with an other member on steemit who said, that your idea here is interesting, but it has a destructive side to it. He was pointing out to me, that you lease SP to be able to provide the upvotes to all the members and that way you are draining your own savings into the hands of the steemit members who borrow the SP, mainly big wales. I was wondering how this system could work whithout giving away our own capital?

When we started out, we were leasing delegation to target a higher SP per share. We have moved to a more sustainable model. We still lease some delegation to target a specific level of voting power per share, but we have put incentives in place to encourage members to upvote and delegate. Now our dependence on delegation is significantly reduced. As long as we are above our target effective SP per share, we are not leasing any more delegation.

Thank you for your answer dear @steembasicincome. As there is no "income" for this basic income, it is very difficult to give without receiving, right? The leasing is necessary as a replacement for that income or powerful delegations, is that right?

Yes, that's right. The leasing is necessary to maintain a certain level. As it happens, the adjustments in the last couple of weeks have made the leasing much less necessary and it's been several days since we've submitted any new orders. We hope to continue without having to lease more, but we will keep a close eye on our effective SP per share and decide accordingly.

Dear @steembasicincome my second question is about the shares... A basic income is never connected to shares but only to the age of people or the nation or community it is payed out to. But everyone in that community gets the same income, there can not be differences. Upon my invitation I immideately invited 6 dear steemians into this experiment because I am thrilled to test this to its limits and received 7 shares in total throug this. How about sharing all vests throug all perticipants and therefore making a real equal basic income workable? what would be the outcome of this experiment?

All the best and keep up your great work!
Moritz

It sounds like you have an idealized idea of what a basic income has to be. What we're doing is an experiment to see if we can move toward a basic income using the power of the blockchain. Since we don't have outside funding or powers of taxation, we are working with what we have.

The share structure is designed so that members have material incentive to support the program in ways that move it toward sustainability. Over time that will give us the ability to gradually equalize the basic income delivered to each member.

I understand. Like in the beginning through higher shares there is a bigger "pay out" through basic income votes and over time once the share fees are "payed back" the basic income equalizes and everybody wins? Is it a bit like that?

Yes, it's a bit like that.

The math is incredibly precise as far as the transformation of shares to upvote weight, but... we deliberately use rounding in some steps, which smooths out the differences and equalizes the income over time. So increasing from 1 share to 2 share will increase your income, but not by a full 2x.

Also, the requirement to sponsor brings in people that might not otherwise be able to get shares (and encourages people to do contests to give away shares, as they can sponsor the winners and also benefit). And when somebody joins without sponsoring, we assign the 2nd share to somebody that only has one (which pulls up the members with fewer shares and also gradually equalizes over time).

Sounds like a good plan @steembasicincome! Happy to aboard.

Hello! I'd like to add @basilmarples and @g10a to my sponsors! thank you !

We're working on that batch now.

Oh very cool. I didn't know there is a discord server. I will be sure to join today.

I'll keep an eye open!

Thanks for the service, I have applied to join!

Your enrollment will be processed in the next batch. Welcome aboard!

Thanks, looking forward to seeing how it works. Maybe a good model for real life!

So do you have a roadmap for the experiment? It will be interesting to see what kind of conclusion we can draw at the end.

One of the serious limitations faced by most of the pilot programs in universal basic income is that they are pilot programs. It is impossible to identify the long-term impact of basic income, or the affect that it has on people's lives, if there is a plan to wrap up the program. People make decisions differently with a flow of temporary income than they would with a flow of lasting residual income.

I am working on the system specifications for full automation of all the back office processes. That will allow us to continue growing, without requiring so much back-end effort. At key points (each time a pool is filled, or any time there is a meaningful change in the Steem ecosystem) we evaluate where we are and identify whether any additional tweaks are needed to keep moving toward long-term sustainability.

Once long-term sustainability is achieved, with most processes fully automated, then we will explore whether we should pitch our concept to other UBI advocates and NGO's outside of Steem. The roadmap does not currently have an expiration date or plan to shut down the program. If it looks like changes to the Steem ecosystem are making the program untenable, then we would create a shutdown plan and communicate it with our members at that time.

Sounds pretty comprehensive to me. I read your post on how you intend to run the system. It seems to me that the Steem UBI requires beneficiaries to keep posting in order to reap the rewards of UBI. This seems to go contrary to the definition of UBI's unconditional income. Do you intend to switch to a system where anybody who participates in the program gets to reap unconditional SBD and Steem?

I think you guys started an extremely innovative initiative to combat the income inequality that is growing concern in many countries worldwide.

The basic income that is provided comes from the pool of new STEEM and SBD that is continually being created by the blockchain protocols. Switching to a transfer-based system that is truly unconditional would require having outside sources of support. If we do decide to pitch to NGO's outside of Steem and gather additional donor support, we could look at transitioning for a more unconditional delivery mechanism at that time.

We think it's more important to establish a sustainable model that is somewhat conditional, and then potentially explore transitioning.

If the world waits around for a perfect solution, instead of accepting 'almost' solutions and improving on them, it will always be waiting around and there would never be any actual solutions! As long as the 'almost' solutions don't make things worse, they're still better than sitting around doing nothing.

Very interesting post and useful for our friend in steemit. My best regards @fajrinurdin1990 if any free time come to my blog @fajrinurdin1990

Good job! Thanks to @sbi2 you have planted 1.57 tree to save Abongphen Highland Forest in Cameroon. Help me to plant 1,000,000 trees and share my Steem Power to the others. Selfvoting is prohibited, but that should be the reason to spread the world to protect our precious environment. Check out profile of our conservation association @kedjom-keku and the founder/coordinator @martin.mikes to get more information about our conservation program. My current SP is 18375.94. Help me to plant more trees with your delegated SP.

Thanks a lot,
