BC establishes task force to study UBI

in #basicincome6 years ago

Canada is quickly becoming a leader in the Universal Basic Income conversation.

The country already has a basic income trial operating in Ontario.

Now, a task force was commissioned to study the feasibility of a program in British Columbia.

The BC NDP government is launching a special task force to explore the implementation of a guaranteed basic income pilot project.

The government is dedicating $4 million to the determine the feasibility of a pilot program.

Part of the motivation for the B.C. government is the loss of jobs at mining sites due to autonomous vehicle technology.

Self-driving vehicles, for example, have already begun to displace haul-truck drivers at mines and have the potential to put thousands of truckers out of work in the future.

The government is intent on being ahead of the technology curve.

“We’re proposing exploring basic income in British Columbia because we believe that government needs to have a plan as the changes on the horizon start to materialize,” Weaver said in a teleconference Tuesday, July 3.

“Amidst trends like automation, part-time and contract work, the nature of our economy and the jobs people have are rapidly changing. Poverty and income insecurity are also becoming more complex, as people struggle to make ends meet, as jobs become less secure and the cost of living skyrockets.”

Part of the responsibility of the task force is also to look at different measures such as negative income tax.

This is a trend that started within the last year. Universal Basic Income is receiving a great deal attention in some countries around the world. With a number of projects already in pilot stage along with more in planning, data will be forthcoming over the next few years.

The results will have a large impact upon how the projects are received by governments around the world.

We still feel that, in addition to the human rights aspect to all this, is that the race is between these pilot projects and technology. Our view is the wave of technological displacement is approaching.

Automation is not going to reverse its present trend. The question is will we be ready for it.

The Manna Project seeks to be part a large part of the solution around the world.

As a BC resident -- I'm extemely happy that this is being investigated. There is a large density of homeless and struggling individuals where I live down by the coast (nice mild climate year-round is appealing to hard workers and those that struggle as well). Going to try to keep my ear to the ground and see if I can't follow this one as it plays out.

Thanks for sharing!

Government doesn't need to get involved. They just ruin everything they try to

You give the people at Main and Hastings money they will spend on on heroin, it fixes nothing. The paramedics there already refer to it as welfare wednesday, the day everyone OD's. So i go to work, pay taxes, and the tax money goes to people who choose to sit around shooting drugs. Why am I working like a sucker?

Everything is now automation. Only God knows how we would survive this life without poverty suck
