How UBI Needs to be Different for Those on Disability
Here are a few considerations for why a person with disability needs a higher basic income.
Plus a few explanations.
We need more transportation costs. We often need taxis and can't drive (or can't afford to).
We need to not have money clawed back, all money we qualify for as a single, should never change if one is co-habitating or able to work a small amount. Also, for our personal safety and so we don't lose the control we need to be independent and self-sufficient.
We need better housing options, living with a roommate is not a good idea in many cases. Often we need a full apartment for ourselves for our privacy and dignity. Few can afford this.
Luxuries for the average person, are things that often a person with a disability needs to have a more functional life. For example, being able to afford massage therapy, physical therapy or a chiropractor.
Because of these issues, I also strongly support that a basic income should be unconditional.
That for people on disability we might even need up to $1000 more each month than an average person.
Healthcare and medical devices and drugs need to be covered.
Because of this oversight, I have often wondered do people really care about the disabled, or do they just wish the problem would go away? It's hard not to feel like a burden on society, but at the same time, if people truly care about us. The current system must change.
A UBI is a great start, but that U must stand for Unconditional.
