Baseball Cards, Prospect Watch - Reynaldo Lopez, White Sox, SP

in #baseballcards7 years ago

The 2017 White Sox organization is a super team - in the making. And by that, I mean their minor leagues. They have the best collection of superstar caliber talents in their farm system, starting with Vandy superstar Carson Fulmer, former Cubs phenom Eloy Jimenez, and the boon from trading Chris Sale - Yoan Moncada and Michael Kopech. In a system riddled with this much talent, it's hard to stand out. But, that's exactly what Reynaldo Lopez did, and because he's prime for a call-up in this ridiculously talented organization, I'd like to introduce you to an up-and-coming ace in Reynaldo Lopez.

Hailing from the Dominican Republic, Reynaldo Lopez was signed as a 18 year old to the Washington National's organization in 2012. He made his MLB debut as a National in 2016, where he pitched for a 5-3 record with a 4.93 ERA. People who were high on Lopez began to balk at those numbers, and the Nationals began to offer Lopez as a trade piece. They found a trade partner in Chicago White Sox, sending Reynaldo Lopez, Lucas Giolito and Dane Dunning for CF Adam Eaton.

Reynaldo had a rather up-and-down season so far, but he's found his stride down the stretch of the season. Let's look at what makes him such a great prospect.

Off-speed Dominance

What made people excited about Reynaldo Lopez was his fastball. It was fast, had a bite, and it was placed nicely inside the strikezone. He dominated with his fastball for years in the Nationals organization, throwing it as his predominant pitch. He brought that same fastball to the majors, but he didn't see the same success. In fact, he began to give up runs at an alarming rate.

This year, with the White Sox, Reynaldo has been using his off-speed pitches more. His change up has been excellent, and because he's been pacing himself, he's been able to control the game better, as well. Lopez hasn't allowed more than two runs in each of his last four starts. His ERA is coming down, and I can safely say that Lopez has potential to be a #3 starter in the Majors and maybe even take a #2 spot if he continues his positive trend.

With their young ace Jose Quintana traded to the Cubs, there is now room in the rotation for Lopez. His call-up is imminent, so if you want to invest, this is the card you want.

Yeah I live just outside of Chicago and they were surprised the Sox gave up the pitcher, but it sounds like they picked up some pretty sweet future talent. The sox for the past couple of years have been hard stuck meh.

I like toast 🍞

Yeah, getting rid of sale was the right call. They're gonna be an electrifying team in a few years, maybe as early as next year. I can't wait to see Yoan Moncada and Eloy Jimenez play together. That's gonna be insane.

So ive never asked do you collect cards for fun, for investments, or some other reason?

It's a little bit of both, to be honest. I like collecting cards of players that I like, and I also think "prospecting" for rookies that turn out to be superstars years down the line is also rewarding.

Being a LA-native, I fell in love with the Dodgers and Lakers. Started out collecting Mike Piazza and Kobe cards in elementary school.
