The Week That Was in Baseball

in #baseball6 years ago (edited)

Thanks but no thanks:

Two-time MVP Miguel Cabrera said he’s done playing hurt for the Detroit Tigers when asked about his setbacks on the DL this week. The former MVP has been knocked around by the media for the past year for playing through injuries and underperforming. Cabrera says he’s under-appreciated and won’t come back until his ailments are gone. Manager Ron Gardenhire gave no timetable for his return. Cabrera is in the third year of his eight year 248 million dollar contract.

Broad Accusations, Big Implications: With a runner on second base and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Belt stepped to the plate. While facing Reds closer Raisel Iglesias, Belt worked the count full before plate umpire Doug Eddings called a third strike on a fastball off the plate to end the game. However, Belt felt he was cheated.

"I think 99.9 percent of the umpires are great, and I actually enjoy talking to 'em," Belt said. "But there's just some times when you have a feeling that one or two of 'em are trying to get the game over with, whether it's through what they say or what they do. And that just can't happen; you can't have those guys affecting careers and affecting games like that."

Being a writer and fan of the game, I don’t think he’s wrong…

Trout goes for greatness:

When referencing the all time greatest seasons by a player, baseball fanatics and historians alike usually point the Babe Ruth in 1923. The Babe was unstoppable. He hit .393 drew 170 walks, a records that stood for 80 years, belted a league high 41 homers, out homering 10 other teams in the process. He matched a career high for stolen bases, doubles while setting a career high in on base percentage at .545, he even tripled 13 times and threw out 20 baserunners from the outfield. The Babe accumulated a 14.1 WAR and an MVP. It was the greatest season ever.

As of right now, Trout entered the week with a 3.52 WAR and is on pace for a 14.2 WAR. No active player has beaten Trout’s 2016 WAR campaign of 10.5 and no has seen a 12 WAR season in a half century.

Thanks for the article. I just wanted to give you a tip that should make it easier for the reader to follow along.

You should consider formatting the header of each topic on its own so it stands out. Otherwise the paragraphs seem to blend together even though you are covering a different topic. Here is an example.

Trout Goes for Greatness: (use ** ** to make it bold)

Then begin the paragraph below. This will help separate the different events you are covering in the article making it easier for the reader to follow along.

Cheers!

I think Miguel did well by stepping down a bit until he gets better. Unfortunately the media is the number one news source responsible for failed careers and unrealised dreams, just simply by the negative things they say about a star. But here's the thing. When you are scoring shots and being at the top of your game they are all behind you and cheering you on. However, when things start going south: long term injury, low performance, out of form etc. Then you should be ready for the bashing and abuse by the media. It's sensation and it sells. Some fans love reading about that stuff. I think he made the right decision.
