Dumb Things in Sports: Throwing the Ball Back

Hello Sports Talk Social! I plan to make a formal introduction later but I thought I would start here with a frustration -- something in the world of sports that must stop!

There is a "tradition" of sorts where a fan of the home team will throw a baseball back onto the field after the opposing team hits a home run. Instead of keeping this valuable souvenir or even selling it (home run balls can be authenticated and sold for $100+), fans throw the ball back onto the outfield. Have you seen or heard about this?

This is not a cute tradition or one without consequences or risks. Here are a few quick reasons why this trend needs to stop:

  • It's against stadium policy and many fans are then asked to leave the game
  • It's intentionally throwing away money and a piece of history
  • It puts players at risk (several have been hit with balls being thrown back onto the field)
  • It puts fans at risk (not every fan has an arm that can get the ball back onto the field)

Other than being a silly tradition, which there are many in sports, I see no logical reason to throw a call back onto the field. But that's just what I think. This is where you come in. What do you think?

When I was a kid, I loved baseball & used to think the throw back of a visiting teams homerun was a super cool act of loyalty by hometown fans. Then free agency came along & showed me that there was no real loyalty in baseball & it was all about the players & owners selling a business to customers. Was never really a fan of any team or player after free agency & think a fan might as well keep a hr ball to sell & try to recoup some of the costs of attending a game.

True, it's a big business and all about the money. I'm still a big Detroit Tigers fan, but I don't care what player hits a home run at a game, I'm keeping it!

Yeah, might as well keep or sell! Thanks Stretch!
