Bands About Bands - Jon Magnusson about Darren Claxton
Before you keep reading, yeah I am biased. This is a guy writing open hearted indie folk songs, talking openly about mental health issues and works hard building relationships, it could be my twin brother.
But it isn't. We just got to know each other thanks to @steemit a few weeks ago. And though I haven't had time to listen to all of his repertoire yet I will review the song of him I listened to the most.
"Early morning light"
With a classic arrangement with acoustic guitar, electric guitar, drums, percussion and bass you gotta bring something extra to make it interesting. And Darren really does in this smooth indie folk anthem. Solid finger picking and strumming on the acoustic guitar blends perfectly with the dreamy electric guitar and the rest of the arrangement. With a voice that is truly soulful he sings about coming out from a depression
"A long time now to know
Wasted all my highs and lows
Pulled apart my head and it shows
Save me now, or go"
The sound quality is really solid and everything is recorded on his own Porta Studio, Zoom MRS 1608. Even though I'm a big fan of the home recording feeling it would be interesting to hear what he would achieve recording in a pro studio environment but without cutting out the edginess that makes his music special.
So in conclusion, I can highly recommend checking this song out and more of his work on his dSound or Steemit and if you're more in to Justin Bieber or any other plain and boring mainstream pop, I guess you wouldn't read this anyway.

I like this bands about bands articles, must go for one. Besides really grateful to Jon, he has been so encouraging and actually my first fellow steemian buying my cd. Darren has such an amazing voice, and I like his honest songwriting. I like also the non overedited feeling (he records in a classical traditional way). Our favourite ginger singer all around.
