Ballet and Nightmares!

Since she was a little girl (well, she is still little... but even littler!), my oldest daughter has been entranced by ballet. I guess that isn't too unusual, there are a lot of little girls that are completely taken by the pink tutu and the thought of becoming a ballet dancer (much to the horror of their parents!).

Anyway, when she was little, she would happily watch and dance to an hour (or longer) of ballet that was being shown on the TV via YouTube. We figured it was always a nice treat for her, and the music education was a nice bonus on the side! So, we would be putting on some interesting ballet from the great ballet companies, with a good selection of music from great composers (and performers!).

However, more recently, she has been having trouble with nightmares after watching movies at night. I guess it is a phase that most kids will go through... but it can make for some difficult nights for the parents, especially when the little one is also playing up with her sleep!

So, perhaps it was not a great idea to let her watch Petroushka (music by Stravinksy) last night just before bedtime! It's really a nice ballet with some great music (which she is just discovering through her music classes).... but perhaps next time I will consider letting her watch it in the morning... a long long way away from the bedtime and the night darkness!

Did you know There are kids CDs to go to sleep and All with classical music. I have them even for the dogs with the upcoming fireworks .image.jpg

Ah yes, the dogs struggle with new year here!

We haven't played music for the kids to fall asleep to... We tend not to have music, unless we are actually listening to it... I guess that comes with the profession!

Ok fair never thought of it that way. Maybe a blog about explaining how to use and not use music Hihi

Howdy sir bengy! yes all you do is switch the times for that viewing, you're a great father!

Ha, somehow, I think it didn't when she saw this... It would still be remembered in the middle of the night!,

howdy again sir bengy! yes sir, everyday is a learning experience when you have kids!

On one hand we expose our children to different things and on the other hand we have their welfare to consider. Its all a balancing act that is a constant challenge to us as they grow

Yes, it is quite tricky to balance... But on the other hand, everything seems to work out in the end... Mostly..

We are a resilient people and can overcome many things.

Sory she was having nightmares I worry about that win my kids. Try not to let them watch anything scary. I hope that she can get over that.

Thank you for sharing. My 3 year old just did her first ballet preformance the other night. They are fun to watch for sure given this is much better.

Ha ha, I remember the first dance performances of the older girl! It's a hilarious event of barely organised chaos!

I can certainly see how that video could give a small child nightmares! But how awesome that she's into ballet.

Yeah, a touch of parenting fail there...

I just skipped into it.

SCARY JUMPING CLOWN!

wow, I can so understand your daughter!
:))

It's a DOLL!!!! That's much less scary!

Hopefully the nightmare pass soon.

It's mostly past now! Probably, it will make an appearance later in the month!

I read somewhere that the human brain operates under "The Law of Recency and Latency"; meaning, we tend to strongly remember the first and last exposures to anything.

Maybe mid-day watching would be better?

Namaste, JaiChai

We'll try that next time!

I would not choose Stravinsky before bedtime so I understand how a child may respond to it lol. She is lucky to have you to watch over her, next time pick something lighter and more fluffy ;)

Yes, I completely forgot about the story... Typical musician, we are in the pit and don't care too much for what is going on upstairs!
