The Spirit of the Earth - Our Planet is a living organism
The Gaia Hypothesis, originally formulated by James Lovelock, is something that has been known in different symbolic ways throughout the ages: That our Earth is a living organism, one that self regulates and heals and that changes over time through various cycles of hot and cold, life and death, swelling and contracting.
In the Captain Planet cartoon show, the Spirit of the Earth is represented by Gaia, a busty mother figure voiced by Whoopie Goldberg.

Life is sacred and it fights constantly against entropy, or death. Scientifically, the forces of entropy work to disburse all energy evenly across the universe, effectively rendering everything barren, static, same; in a word - dead. But LIFE fights against this! Life is a high energy activity, and the circle of life is powerfully and wonderfully made so that energy, instead of being disbursed into the universe, is cycled over and over again between life forms.
We humans are stewards of this life process.

As represented in the show, Gaia selects HUMANS to carry on the job of protecting the Earth, and its cycles, from the threats, which are also mostly human. This may sound ironic, but in fact, it is profoundly true. We are powerful living creatures destined to have an impact - we are not called to only react but we are called to lead, to change, to create. As we will see, Captain Planet always signs out, "THE POWER IS YOURS!". This is in reference to the very real power we have inside of us to change the world, for better or worse.
There are those in this world who would take our power from us, or convince us that we have none. A body of bureaucrats cannot regulate the Earth into being different, or healthier. But each human can do their part to awaken to their power, accept their divine task and CARE. Care for humans, care for the Earth and to share that care with others.

As we realize our power we must also separate the Earth and all the creation with the Energy behind all things. We have been called to care and protect the Earth, not worship it. We are a part of it, and we are not called to worship ourselves. During our period of awakening and understanding, we will review many of the steps and missteps that humans have taken over the centuries; continue with the first steps of recognizing your power in this wonderful world!
