Really interesting and well written @roused. I know a little of the period and circumstances from a relative who was born in Germany and lived ther before, during and after the war.

The pre war initiatives were in many ways ground breaking. Thanks for the detailed look at such an amazing machine and its place in history.

I agree, if you understand German there is a very interesting documentary film made in 1955 about VW. It also shows life in those early years just after WWII. Even if you don't understand, the images are interesting.
