I wonder if there's a "retro-fit-kit" out there for off the grid living... this module could definitely be made for less. Very sleek though.
There are thousands of retro-fit-kits. They are just in pieces, not kits.
It is just solar or wind power. You work out how much energy you use, and then figure out how much solar panels and wind turbines you need to buy to fill that.
Like the Tesla Powerwall. You can buy more for less, it just doesn't come with a spiffy looking cover.
The one thing that is very different when you are living off of battery power is that you can't just plug things in. Like, your TV, it is always on and draining your batteries even when not in use. Off-grid people put a switch going to the outlet to turn it ALL off. Or similar with a power strip.
There are thousands of articles on solar living. To me it is all very simple. But, I guess it needs to be made even simpler for this current generation that never had a shop class.
This is definitely the iPhone of tin-houses. But if they have better ideas to improve this concept, I guess that's how it's going to get funded..
My problem with these things is not about building one.
It is about zoning. In so many places you cannot live in a trailer. Or you can only live in a trailer 6 out of 7 days, or other stupid shit.
And if you pay all the fees for building codes/permits, then you might as well build a house. It's cheaper and far more sturdy. But then codes demand you build a monster of a house...
I would easily build these things, knock them out, make them better... but I have no ability to work with the state anymore.
Looks like the Thais have it best when it comes to these matters. In Bangkok, it certainly looks like people can do whatever they want on their land (definitely not in city centres though).
Edit: ah zoning, indeed, i don't have any idea at all on how to plop this anywhere I want to lol.
