Aswcontest: Corridors of Daugavpils fortress

Two kilometers from the center of Daugavpils (the second largest city in Latvia) there is an early 19th century fortress. It is a city in a city. 150 hectares of a fortified area. 8 bastions, 6 ravelins, 6 counterguards, 4 gates, 10 streets, 80 buildings and a small park.

There are 1200 registered inhabitants living in 18 apartment houses. However, after the withdrawal of Soviet troops in the 90s the vast majority of buildings is deserted and looks like a ghost town. Yeah, a real paradise for urbex fans. And for this reason, it is one of my favorite places in Latvia.

If I hear "corridors", then two buildings appear in front of my eyes. The first one is from 19th century and it has a veeery loooong corridor...

For a long time I thought it was a hospital.

However, there were barracks and a dining room.

Second building is from the Soviet era. It is the Daugavpils Higher Military Engineering School (DVVAIU). In 1993, in connection with the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Latvia school was relocated to Stavropol. For 45 years DVVAIU has prepared more than 34 thousand officers.

The building is very large. It has 3 floors and a basement. And of course a lot of corridors...

I visited this place for the first time in May 2014 and I was impressed by space and emptiness. You can walk, and walk, and walk... It is not difficult to get lost in the maze of corridors.

It is planned to demolish the building and build garages in this place.
