remnants of Ney Springs Resort - entry for #aswcontest with theme "In the Woods!"

in #aswcontest6 years ago

Close to Lake Siskiyou just outside my home town Mount Shasta is a dirt road and trail that lead to a beautiful waterfall: Faery Falls. Just before reaching the falls one can see on the right side of the trail the remnants of a wall. Apparently this once was the location of a luxury resort (the Ney Springs Resort) but today all that's left is this one wall.

At its height, the resort boasted a hotel that could accommodate 50 people, a bathhouse, and various outbuildings including a barn and a carriage house.
Today, little remains of the resort. The forest has reclaimed the site, leaving little of the resort’s remnants visible to the naked eye. (source: summitpost.org)

Ney Spring was discovered by John Ney in 1887. It became a destination health resort based on the mineral waters there. The water has a ph of 11.6 and a silica content of 4,000 parts per million, the highest values known to occur in natural ground waters. (source: mountshastatrailassociation.org)

The photo below shows the wall, now seemingly embedded in the hill side.

In the cropped version of the image below I've marked two pipes sticking out(1a & 1b) that still have running water, and a basin(2).

Given the location and current natural state of the site it's difficult to imagine that once there were a hotel, bathhouse and several more buildings here. A little bit downhill on the other side of the trail one can get to Ney Springs Creek. There is also still a remnant of the old resort, a small cistern in a concrete structure, supposedly for bathing.

Nowadays, people still come here occasionally for ceremonial bathing in the creek.
