Reach Mars in ~30 Min?

in #astronomy8 years ago (edited)

According to the latest science breakthrough, that may happen in our lifetimes. Currently, our satellites can take up to ~8 months to reach Mars. Philip Lubin, a cosmologist at the University of California Santa Barbara, advocates photonic propulsion as the new form of space travel.

Instead of one giant laser, it'll be a series of lasers orbiting Earth that would work together to create one powerful beam. That would propel a very minuscule satellite, with solar sails, toward its destination. No heavy thrusters or fuel. So more speed. Lubin argues that since this technology exists and it's only a matter of testing.
