Arweave: Data Storage of the Future

in #arweave6 years ago (edited)

We are familiar with our normal and traditional storage methods such as cloud storages, offline storages and Co and this types of storages come with issues of their own such as limited time of storage where the file is deleted once the storage period is over, high fees of transaction and having a high risk of being vulnerable to hackers. In fact, the way the internet is being regulated, one cannot just go and store any type of file he or she wishes to the Internet as the government is having a worldwide monitoring of the Internet. So what can be done about this?

Arweave Provides the Solution

This project Arweave was founded with the goal to make use of blockchain as the answer to the above problems of data storage. They plan to make data storage cost efficient, free from censorship and totally permanent by the use of their own protocol and distributed ledger called Blockweave.

Data stored in traditional forms of storage has a liability to get tampered with and be modified especially during their storage but Arweave tackles that by rejecting any attempt to change or modify any content that's being stored by the network. So this ensures that there is no alternative version of the stored document anywhere.

Arweave claims to be the “New Backbone of the Decentralized Internet” as the Arweave is based on a new consensus mechanism called “Proof of Access” which produces a cheap permanent storage in the history of mankind. The transactions speed also on the blockweave have far surpassed that of a normal blockchain and the weave reaches up to 5000 transactions per second.

Another feature of Arweave is it enables developers to easily create dapps on it that can utilise the Arweave network. This apps can range in functions from the usual social networking to the news dissemination.

The Arweave Tokens

This tokens were developed as a form of payment to miners when they maintain the weave network as a user submits a data for storage on the weave. It's a very small amount and it shows an advantage over the traditional forms of storage as the weave is maintained into the future, so is the documents.

Application of Arweave

Arweave can be applied in the following which include

  • Raw Data Journal: where there is the storage of a large amount of data safely and economically.
  • Permanent Archive of the Internet: where by taking snapshots and storage of various Web pages in the Internet, such that the integrity of the data is preserved and it prevents tampering of it.
  • Storage of Legal Documents: legal documents can be stored safely on a permanent basis, free from tampering and modification.
  • Verifiable Democracy; During elections, Arweave can be used to store electoral results and store every single vote casted so as to prevent electoral fraud.
  • Rest API: this was launched to enable developers create their own apps and projects based on the Arweave. The system only collects a small token for writing the data to the blockweave but reading the data is free.

Conclusion

We have many traditional storage options such as Dropbox, Google drive, and so on and they cannot compare to the features offered by Arweave being that it's centralised and also stores data permanently on the blockchain.
