[CR] The lesson of watercolor rose

Hello! Today I have prepared two lessons on watercolor roses, which will talk about two different approaches to drawing flowers. Now here is the first one, but later I'll publish second article.

It is fairly believed that drawing flowers is more a girl's business. But it just so happened that my creative activity was connected with flowers for a long time, although I painted them more with oil and in various types of painting. But what if suddenly the task arose to paint a rose with watercolor paints, and the time to draw quite a bit?

Now I will talk about the basic rules and subtleties, often overlooked by artists-teachers in various lessons and master classes, but which are very important.

As an example, I used my own picture taken in early September.

You can to paint watercolor roses in different ways. For example, to wet the sheet and make a few colored spots, and then add small brushes details until the paper is dry! Yes, you can. But unlike other flowers, roses (or peonies) have a complex structure of the flower, where the edges of patals are quite soft in edges, but closer to the center there are many small details.

As much as we would like to, but working only on wet, we will not achieve very clear boundaries on the petals, and we still have to either dry the sheet, continuing to work on dry, or very quickly to work with gradually drying paper.

Today I just suggest to make our rose quickly. So, make a sketch. There are different options to draw the outline of the flower. Someone makes only a General outline, and then draws the details with brushes, but I suggest to pay attention to the details of the flower and make a drawing as detailed as possible. This will then help to quickly cope with the task when working with paints.

Important! If your pencil sketch isn't bright enough, you run the risk to loose it when you start to overlay watercolor layers. But if you make the outline very fat, it will be enough dark after work. Try to determine for yourself the Golden mean of it, because someone draws with bright, opaque layers of paint, and others apply thin, translucent strokes of watercolor.

It seems, we can not do without wetting the sheet in our case. I work on a small format A5, although I draw a large flower. So far, everything is quite simple, we use a small brush to make the main spots that barely resemble a future rose. When the sheet is slightly (not completely) dry, you can start to draw the individual parts.

Since we have a fairly fast drawing process today, the details of the rose is not copying the original. It is important for us to get the common details and proper color distribution.

Important! Please note: all of our main fills – is mainly the light part of the flower. And only when we begin to work with small brushes on a dried sheet of paper, then draw the shadow areas.

There are several ways to overlay layers in watercolor techiques. It is possible, as in the chart, start with the darkest corners, gradually drawing all the lighter parts. Then you just need to make sure that each layer dries well.

But today we have a quick drawing lesson and I almost do not wait until each layer get dry. Therefore, I draw all at once at the same time, not much worrying that individual areas of fills can flow into each other. Once we have outlined color spots, work with a brush like a pen or pencil, highlighting the subtle elements of the rose.

And only when we have done the main work on the distribution of tone and color, you can take a very thin brush and make eyeliners in the right places. Somewhere it will be dark lines (folds and corners), and somewhere light (for example, veins on the petals). Thus, we level out the ugly places of the overflow of some color areas to others, indicating where the hard edges of the petals are needed.

And of course the background. In our case, the flower turned out to be quite saturated, so I did not spare the paint and framed the rose with the background. But do not have to do it too dark, as I came out, even if in the original it is. Sometimes it is enough to note a few colored spots and the picture will look lively and original.

What a beautiful painting, and obviously I agree with you that anyone should feel good to draw flowers as they are gorgeous.

Congratulations for your curie vote, yurche, your wonderful paintings really deserve some love =).

Wow! Thank you so much!

I did not know that the paper has to be wet before painting with water colors. I thought you just go on painting like painting with oil.

It is amazing to see how that fifth photo that looks like a mess turned into a lovely and beautiful art. I love it with its vivid and bright colors. Thank you for sharing it here.

Thank you very much, @macoolette. You are so kind ; ))) Yes, the paper can be wetted. But someone draws on dry paper. In the end, the such drawings will be different.

In your experience, which is better? The wet paper or the dry one which you draw straight on to it? What's the effect of wetting the paper again?

It all depends on the grade and density of the paper. According the preferences each artist draws differently. Someone wets the sheet, while others paint only on dry paper, but someone can still combine. For example, you can wet the sheet not much or partially, make the main blurred spots, and then draw on the dried paper.

And some artists wet the sheets very abundantly to draw always on a wet basis. In this case all the elements of the picture will be blurred.

If the paper is well dried after the first layer of watercolor, you can easily wet it again, but carefully : )

Very interesting. I never thought that wetting the paper has that much different effect. Thanks for all the clarifications.😊

Hi there,

welcome to Artisteem and thank you for your contribution.

Thank you so much, dear lady @siamcat! I promise to please you with my new publications!

I liked seeing the process executed to paint with watercolors, I did not know that if the lines of the sketch were clear they could be erased during the process, in fact, I know very little about how watercolors should be used and thanks to you, now I have a notion a clearer one. In my country, watercolors are practically inaccessible due to their high cost, so much so that I have never seen them in real life hahaha. You did an excellent job, I liked seeing this rose.

Yes, before working with watercolor you should always immediately decide whether to make a clear outline with a pencil. Sometimes it is not needed at all, but sometimes you can not do without it. Tank you for a comment, @iraidamatheus. As you are an artist I follow you ; )

Very nicely done, love the colors

Thank you so much, @sunscape!

Its incredible that at some pint 5his beautiful painting looked like nothing but just a colorful mess! 😀 you really are a great artist and i love how this turned out even though you did it in a hurry.

Why can't we do without wetting the paper here, is it because of the texture of the paper?

Beautiful painting!

It's just a small album with A5 sheets. And there is not very thick paper. I tried to do this job quickly because the moisture was drying in a moment on the sheet. And there is no texture at all. The paper is completely flat, not very suitable for wet watercolor work. Sometimes artist have to work on such material ))). Therefore, the next lesson, where I drew another flower, will be devoted to drawing on almost dry paper. Thank you for attention and comment!

What's the ideal type of paper for a watercolor painting? I will try to check out the new post to see how you work your way through painting on an almost dry sheet😀

Cotton paper is considered ideal. But it's quite expensive. you may use papers more easier, but then you need to look at its density. The denser, the better for watercolors ; )

Ooh... The density of the paper is what counts. I keep learning every day and that sure is cool. And, actually my first time hearing of a cotton paper (that's it in the photo, right?)

Yes, I specially found a photo of some paper for you see ; ))

Thank you so much!😊
