ROSE: An Abstract Water Color Portrait
A watercolor portrait as a wedding gift for the bride.
A groom contacted me through facebook message and ask me if I could make a unique portrait for her bride as a wedding gift. Realistic Portraits are so common and he wanted it to be different so we agreed on making her picture as an abstract portrait but can still recognize her features.
Materials and tools used:
- Sakura Koi Watercolour Set
- Pencil
- Flat Brush
- 0 Pointed Brush
- White Inked Gel Pen
- 20" x 30" Bristol Board
- A Huge Picture Frame with Matting
Process
The battlefield is so huge for me and overwhelming but it's a good challenge for me.
I started with outlining the features of the bride's face with a pencil.
I don't focused much on details since it's an abstract portrait. But I make sure that her features can be recognized as hers.
Then, I started to apply watercolor on her outlines.
It looks off at first.
Looks weird, but it's included in the process. Every watercolor and some artwork has this ugly stage. Keep going.
Yes! I can see her face bit by bit !!!
As you can see, I used two types of brush, one pointed and one big flat.
Wide flat brush is for large areas such as hair and skin, while the pointed brush is for the small areas such as eyes and nose, etc.
We can still see the outlines !!!
Keep on applying watercolor.
I let the watercolor on the previous process to be dried out so I can apply and paint darker and black colors. This is to add the accent and to define the features of the subject.
I added black particularly on the shadowy part such as the hair below and near the neck, the eyes, and the shadows on her face.
Then I add more colors on her skin to make her more lively.
And this is me with the framed artwork. Please forgive my oily face.
Beautiful big one. It's really impressive watercolor. Fresh and transparent. Good job.☺
