Religious art comes in many forms, from the stained glass of churches to paintings from unknown artists. Wood carving is another art form that gives us a different look at religious depictions. Our country has a wide collection of wood carvings with some dating back from the 16th century. Join me today as I share great works of art which are

This is a depiction of the Nativity Scene which we are all familiar with. The birth of the Jesus Christ in the manger. In this piece we see Joseph, Mary and the baby Jesus. The three wise men are not present in this scene but instead there are three angels welcoming the birth of Jesus. Above there is no star but four angels are also present that hovers above.

A scene from one of the stations of the cross. The eighth station station in which Jesus meets the weeping women in Jerusalem.

A chest that was used by priests in the San Agustin convent. This chest has a lot of intricate detail which tells a lot of stories. If you would look closer you will see local scenes from the past with sword fights, hunting and Chinese presence. A lot of animal figures are carved on this chest cats, deer horses and wild boar.

One of the church pews which have a carving of the insignia of the double headed eagle. A symbol of power which was used by Spain, the Roman Empire, Germany and Russia.

James the Apostle a patron saint of Spain has a legend. It was told that he appeared and fought with the Spaniards against the Moors riding a white horse. This was during the battle of Clavijo.

These works of art carved from wood are inspirations which sheds a different light on the art of religion. A lot of these works has artists which remains unknown but is strongly believed has been carved by our local artist.

wow some great carvings there. the famous genesis painting, carved in wood looks beautiful, i love it. you mention 'our country', where are you from, i dont think i read it in the post, may have just missed it though.

Hey thanks for visiting. l come from a land with more than 7000 islands called the Philippines. I do not know how to paint nor carve wood but it has captured my admiration and fascination.
