Today I started a research at Steemit using as tags a couple of terms that I frequently read and we use within the geek/otaku world, noticing with honest surprise how the search engine didn’t register a single result, at least on Spanish (though I perfectly know that Steemit handles prefixed labels).
Then, I realized a unique situation that keeps repeating whenever I am at one chat room at Discord, and even in the middle of normal conversations within a group of the community: They don’t know neither understand many terms that some users say sometimes, terms referring to the fandom world, and shipping, or Role-Play.
At this current moment, there's a huge niche of unconventional concepts to be exploited and addressed at Steemit.
That’s why in such a situation, I can’t let pass this opportunity to share a note talking about this activity/hobby that has been with me for 10 years, and that I still happily practice almost every day: Role-Play.
« Introduction to "Role-Play": The Art of Writing in Duo »
There are many unknown terms for people who aren’t familiarized with the geek world even if said terms aren’t exclusively use don that subculture and instead, they are used on other creative circles and between fans, as it happens with those related to fantasy writing and Role-Play.
But in order to sink on the extended topic of Role-Play, It is advisable to first know some of the elements that compose it.
• "Do you remember ´The Rise of the Guardians’ Movie?, that film is based on those books, a saga named ‘Guardians of Childhood´, written by William Joyce." - Photo by @tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2 •
« The first term I want to talk about is “OC” »
OC means “Original Character”, and refers exactly to that.
An OC is created by a person, without the need of them being a professional illustrator, writer or overall, a person who is strictly involved on the Artistic World.
Anyone can create an OC, and as it is a product of your imagination, all their physical, esthetic, mental and psychological features are also developed by you.
• "This printed series, that counts with 2 illustrated books and 4 novels, was my source of motivation in order to consistently role after a couple of years of artistic hiatus." - Photo by @tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2 •
« "Are there any rules to Create an OC?" »
Every OC should have their own well elaborated and complete character sheet, the more rich and detailed the origin, development and story of your character are, the more consistence and substance your OC will have.
• "Those Books’ esthetic is rich and full of originality. The novels content small precious illustrations." - Photo by @tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2 •
It’s not the same to say:
“I have created an OC, he’s a blue-haired Angel. His name is Sebastian, he fights against demons and he’s super powerful”, and that his character sheet (and your mental work) stops right there…
• "SPOILER: The complete story of Kozmotis Pitchiner (Black Pitch, or the Boogeyman) is written right to create heartaches. He was a General from the Golden Age, who lost his family during a mission assigned by the Monarchy of those times. The Pitch we know is what was left of this fallen warrior, now consumed and possessed by all fears and shadows of the Universe. The Nightmare King. Btw, I LOVE PITCH." - Photo by @tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2 •
To say:
“I have created an OC, she’s a maiden, Pythoness of the Thunder God. She’s the only survivor of her tribe, taken as a victory token by an enemy tribe after the hecatomb of the peoples in the western hemisphere of this arid country, devout nation now of the Deities of the Sea and Fire, where by her grace and subtlety, she wins the heart of the youngest Warlord who has assumed the regency of the barbarian tribes of all the Warlords. She is now the only vestige in the world of this moribund religion, religion absurdly fragmented from the others due the fact that no one supposes, that these Deities love each other”, and following this is a detailed list of her personality, clothing, relation with other characters and her views of the world around her, for example.
• "Sanderson is my favorite character, both in the movie as in the books. When I went to the theaters to watch “Rise of the Guardians”, my world gave a twist of 360° with this Sandman’s concept: A Star who survived to the Golden Age, the only Guardian of Childhood who is able to face Pitch Black on battle, and the only one who knows his story... in the end, I fell so in love with the character, and he touched a oh-so sensitive fiber inside my soul, that I started to role-play with him, and he was my Muse for almost 3 years." - Photo by @tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2 •
Many famous games allow us to get close to creating an OC inside a pre-existing universe with all its characteristics, story and premises, as World Of Warcraft.
Also, proper RPG/Table games (intense) that ask us for more detail and care, such as Vampire, The Masquerade, whose modality implies instructing ourselves a lot on the subject, and study all the elements which are part of the "Worldbuilding", books about clans, races and a long fascinating background that is able to teleport us to this world where everything forms one single reality: Vampires exists, and on this reality, they need to stay in the shadows at all costs".
And if you were thinking on it, you got it! There are a lot of several different modalities for “Roleplaying”, and maybe this is the most difficult part when you want to start on this particular world. This user opportunely talks about the choice of a system for "Roleplaying".
• "Thanks to this infatuation (almost obsession) with Sanderson's character, not only did I became an active Role-Player, but I also create an OC, among all my repertoire, who would be the most spoiled of all: Adhara, a star’s fragment from the Golden Age, embodied at the end of a mortal life, and raised by Sanderson as her own daughter. A Dream Weaver." - .Drawing/Photo by @tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2 •
An OC can be developed beneath the premise that their creator imagines them, within the plot or story of a series the Role-player admires or is a fan of: For example, there are several OC created for fan-fictions and Role-Plays of Saint Seiya o Pokémon (if we are talking from the end of 90s to early 2000), Naruto, Persona, D.Gray-Man and Yu-Gi-Oh! (for the most contemporary).
• "On this Sketch, Adhara is already an adult, and most of her story goes on while she is a baby, and then a little girl. In part, her creation and upbringing by Sanderson, is a favor to Pitch Black, as a wish to keep his daughter's sanity: Niggurath, born from a mortal shell, unique and wonderful phenomenon of nature that managed to survive the unnatural and horrific mutation suffered by all the offspring that Pitch Black has spread worldwide; Niggu is a Living Nightmare, and her soul is bound to Adhara’s by the red string of fate. Adhara, with her sole existence, reminds Niggu that there’s kindness in the world, and keeps her sane with her love." - Drawing/Photo by @tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2 •
If we are talking about millennial of the last generation, we will find OC´s created and inspired on The Walking Dead, Glee, Orange Is The New Black, to name some example.
OCs can be created for many reasons, from pure personal enjoyment, to make them participate at Role-Plays.
« "So, what is Role-Play?" »
I like to describe Role-Play as the activity you share with a duo or a group, assuming the identity of a cannon character or an OC, and whose interactions derivate into a story, created by the narrative sequence from each “Role-Player’s” interaction when it’s their round to reply and participate on the plot.
• "Yes, I really like Adhara’s story, and I’m still working on it at the present times. Her universe is the same as Sanderson and Kozmotis’ plot world. Now, this sketch is from another OC, her name is Ashley, and is a Sorcerer's Apprentice." - Drawing/Photo by @tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2 •
Long story short, Role-Play is about writing a story between two or more people, taking as starting point what is known as the “Starter”, initial text which give context to start writing, i can be a situation, a place, an action, or all this together, even a whole story; a “Starter” is an explicative and introductory text with the information to place the characters or OC´s on the role.
• "Ashley’s story happens inside a Witch AU, an alternative universe that I created where Witch and Wizards Covens exist on distant places on the planet. Sometime, I like to draw little sketch as those for my OCs, even if those aren’t finished drawings, I use guides such as this one and create small pieces to illustrate some of the Role chapters with my Partner." - Drawing/Photo by @tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2 •
Talking about Role-Playing equals touching a super extended topic, but at the current moment I want to share the basic notions to place us on this huge yet discrete sub-culture.
« Role-Player, Muse, Headcanon, Starter… »
The person who “role-plays”, is called Role-Player.
A Role-Player can use characters from a series, manga, comic, movie, novel, book or videogame in order to interact trough their own interpretation with another Role-Player, after previous conversations and agreeing on what kind of story is going to be developed, along with the guidelines on what is allowed or not.
“Role-playing” has many, many variations, and depending on the level, experience, and training of the Role-Player, the matter can become quite serious and structured.
• "This is Monique, an OC that I had placed on an Alternative Universe to the Headcanon created by the comic artist Surfacage, on her comic ´And the World Will Turn to Ash´, with the OC/Piera, creation of my Role-Partner." - Drawing/Photo by @tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2 •
Not all Role-Players are open to role-play with several persons, there exists Role-Players that are “exclusive” of one single Partner, that is to say, they are a duo who “role-play” exclusively between them, without allowing any third intervention or participation on the plots they develop or the relationship between their characters.
When you “role-play”, a micro-universe is created between two persons.
Imagine what it must be to write a book that never ends, in company and by the hand of a person who you feel tuned with.
• "That’s exactly what is happening to me with Monique, being that I’m frequently including her in roles since the start of the year. She is a gentle and delicate trainer placed in the Pokémon GO Universe." - Drawing/Photo by @tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2 •
« "What Platforms and Media are there to Role-play?" »
There are many means for role-play, and with the current technological age, the range of options to interact with your Partner (or group) is huge.
As it was before, there are still forums and webs (aka: Servers) for this activity, especially those that are created for an specific fandom.
However, getting affiliated to one or more of those servers or forums with topics arranged for "Role" are no longer the only options that are counted if you want to play as a Role-Player. Now, you can create your own private servers on Discord.
• "Sketches of Ashley and Monique. I really feel the need to ink them..." - Drawing/Photo by @tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2 •
Before Discord, Messenger, Skype, Twitter, and even FB where the viable means for “Roleplaying”, but they weren't the most suitable for their type of graphical interface and few to none options for the creation of topics and files.
Currently and for a long time, Tumblr is an oasis for Role-Players and OC´s creators, nowadays you can find thousands of accounts/blogs on this platform solely dedicated to representing a character.

• "Let's do a Review!" •
I want to close this post, which took me days to write despite my excitement, with a table that defines the several concepts that I consider most relevant, in order to understand the language of this role-world, plus a personal note about my experience as a Role-Player.
Concept | ★ ★ ★ Description ★ ★ ★ |
---|---|
Headcanon | It’s an idea, plot, story that doesn’t belong to the original story of a series, movie, book, novel or any other kind of origin of a character/original plot used for the Role-play (Canon, on the other hand, would refer to the real and original plot of the source). |
Partner | Roleplaying Duo, or the person you role-play more frequently. There are several definitions of this term, personally, I prefer the first. |
Starter | Is the text, document, post, line or note that marks the beginning of the Role. Gives context to the plot and locates the participants, while giving them premises from which point to start. |
OOCC | Means "Out of Character", and is used to indicate that is the User/Mun who is interacting and talking at the current moment. |
Muse | The Character you are using at the Role. |
Mun | Refers to the "User", you, the person behind the character. Comes from the word "Mundane". |
AU | Abbreviates "Alternative Universe", and refers to a kind of Roleplaying where the characters are placed in alternative worlds in contrast of those they belong to, but keeping all their characteristic, personality and character. For example: Placing Naruto in the Voltron Universe. |
🎐 My Experience in the Role-play World 🎐
My start in the world of Role dates back about 15 years ago. At that time, there were forums and servers for this activity, and groups of Messenger dedicated to characters and OC's, we called them "Sanctuaries".
For example, more or less by then I met the one who would be my favorite character of all times: Kurama (Shuiichi Minamino) from Yuu Yuu Hakusho. There were several "Kurama Fans" with so much more time on the series fandom than me, and who dedicated pages to condense bios of the character, along with images, curious facts and even sections with files of Role publicly posted so the rest of fans could read them.
• "I often start writing about an OC, before thinking on their physical appearance. When I reach this point of the work, where it comes to give them a body of their own, I start by the eyes, since as they say: are the doors to the soul. If I define the character’s glare, everything else comes easily." - Drawing/Photo by @tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2 •
This, almost 20 years ago, was known as "Sanctuary". So, if we are talking about Kurama, he had tons of those dedicated to him, which could range from Fotolog and MySpace pages, to Messenger pages.
Through one of those "Sanctuaries", if my memory is correct, I met my first Role-Partner, an adorable girl from Mexico whose nickname was "Hika", and with who I spent long afternoons interpreting my husbando Kurama. Hika and I used canon characters from other series to role-play, we didn’t have OC´s.
• "If you have no idea what kind of look you can give to your OC, Pinterest is always a faithful ally for good references." - Drawing/Photo by @tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2 •
The second Role-Partner I had was a classmate, but as she didn’t have Internet at home, we used a notebook to write, notebook that we exchanged by turns. She would write a chapter, and I would write the following one. On this occasion, we had OCs.
• "When my hand gets loose, I tend to lean towards Yami No Matsuei esthetics to illustrate very pigmented eyes with hyper-eyelashes, although I should also mention Zetsuai Bronze, I love this manga with the force of 1.000 suns, it’s in the TOP 3 of mangas that I need and wish to have on physical volume." - Drawing/Photo by @tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2 •
With time, I lost contact with both of them, and I spent many years without touching the Role topic again, because I didn’t trust anyone easily in order to share this kind of hobby (besides, I’m terribly exigent when it comes to choose a Partner). Not many accomplish my expectative; coherence, good syntaxes, carefulness in details are essential for me, also one single orthographic horror can make my rage to explode, and also my scorn towards the person.
It wasn’t until the end of 2009, when I met the Role-Partner of my dreams.
I’m a Role-Player of a single Partner, I’d never had many Role-mates at one time; personally for me, it represents some conflict since through Role, you can create very strong affection bonds.
That’s why all my attention and creative energy goes directly to interact with one single person, and the results are fantastic.
• "Rejected. Those are too simple. Eggs without Salt. And a close-up to the little note!" -
Drawing/Photo by @tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2 •
I know well that this is not the common way, a lot of people go from one Role-mate to another, or change them periodically (due creative differences, lack on time zone synchrony, having little to none interest on the plots, fandom changes, within another ton of reasons).
But I, literally live the dream, as I have the same Partner since approximately 2010.
At the present time, I’m able to write and follow the rhythm of almost any genre: Romance, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Angst, Drama, Action, Comedy, and almost everything. Although I have a preference to avoid scenes and plots that are too sad or filled with angst, and the hetero romance isn’t really between my lists of interests.
Normally, I’m who takes the initiative and writes the Starters (that can go above 2.000 words. I sent a 9.000 words starter once, I was really excited and I didn’t pay most attention on the quantity of text); and my average time of reply goes around 3 minutes to 8 minutes max per reply/paragraph. I’m always really thankful with my Partner, cause she knows how to encourage me to write more and better, and appreciates my testaments, instead of complaining "about them being terribly long".
« "So, have you ever created an OC?" »

All are characters on who I have spent a lot of my love and dedication, not only in what comes to the graphic part, but mostly on their stories. I’m really motivated to condense each one of them on an auto-conclusive story format in order to create a story compendium (I read once that every person most publish a book at one point of their life, just as they shall plant a tree).
To mention some of them, there is my precious and absolutely no-sane "Atnizka", inspired by the Mad Hatter of Alice in Wonderland. "Monique" (who I already presented above), a delicate Trainer placed in the Pokémon Go Universe. And my spoiled baby, "Adhara" (who I also presented already, and who I must change her name, cause this really doesn’t convince me, and isn’t in synonym with the character’s soul, also the phonetic of the name doesn’t appeals to me at 100%), daughter of Sanderson Mansnoozie (aka, Sandman, of the Rise of the Guardians).
• Why did I decide to write a post talking about this Topic? •
Beyond of the fact that I think is a topic that hasn’t been developed/explored/shared on Steemit (and one that’s super interesting!), soon I will start to share content about the OCs who occupy the heart of my Partner and mine, and I feel that talking about this topic is very super suitable before filling my blog with stories and drawings about characters that you would end asking yourselves, “Where is this character from? Where do they belong to?”.
• Photos by @tesmoforia, with a Lumix/Panasonic DMC-FH2. Gif made by the petite beauty, @vanuzza •
I’m even considering the idea of opening a second account on Steemit, in order to place there all the drabbles, one shot´s, fan-fics and stories per chapters that I write.

📢 For the "Character Development":
📢 In what comes to the “Graphic" Part:
I recommend reading this long (but super useful) note if you wish to have a better and more formal notion about the Role-play world on this modality, although the note is placed on the WoW fandom; this is the only User at Steemit that I was able to find that talks about this world (Link on Spanish ):
