The art of the beholder

in #art6 years ago

My father was a painter, a very good painter who crossed many styles and mediums over his 70+ year career. His strength was in landscapes (no matter the technique) but, his abstract work is where I think he was exceptional.

Abstract art is like jazz music, many can mimic but few can play very well and the audience is similar, few have the imagination involved to not only listen, but hear what is being said. There is one piece of work of my dad's that tears my heart out yet, most observers will feel nothing at all, no matter how long they search.

The thing with art is that it is not just a creation of the artist, it is one from the audience and as the pretentious folk guess at the meaning and symbolism provided by the artist, the true connoisseur is an artist themselves. The art observed becomes its own palette and the audience is invited to pick up a mental brush and get to work. When it comes to art, what is meant by the artist is irrelevant in comparison to what is painted by the viewer.

Humans however are not adapted for art, they look at the lines and smudges on the page delivered by a small child and ask, "what is it?" without ever spending the time to drink it in and let their mind wander. They are looking to evaluate it, not appreciate it for what it is, the mind of their little child expressed visually for them to see. To see inside the mind of a child is to see potential itself, something most adults flitter away like autumn leaves in the wind.

We want to be right, we want to evaluate what we see and judge the artist on what we took out of it but, we are scared to be free, we are scared to create our own work of art through observation, perhaps fearful of what we may find. Maybe as we age it is too uncomfortable to be like that child and let our mind be known, even in the privacy of our own head.

Too many artists are trying to get their point across, spending too much time explaining, not enough time creating their mind to become the paints for the audience to then use and create again. The power of art is in the ability to evoke emotion and inspire an action. Whether it be a political statement or a a social movement, the goal is to get movement, change, a new course set.

In most, a work of art will do little else than calm a mind, look pretty on a wall or be a talking piece because of its price. But, for the true artists in the audience, it could be the catalyst for their greatest works, force them to confront the hurdles of their life and drive them to find a way over, around or through if needs be.

Art is the randomness of the universe, the gene deformity that drives evolution and creates whole new paths of opportunity and discovery and one piece ignored by all can be instrumental for one and create a reaction so strong, it changes the world. An apple falling from a tree that leads on to the redefinition of the collective understanding of the universe and all the fractalled branches onward from that point.

Stop analyzing what is meant by the work and start discovering what the work means to you. It could just be a pretty thing on a wall, a few word that make you smile and reminisce or, it could tear you in two and make you whole again at the same time. There is art in us all, whether thought as an artist or not. Art stops when our ability to create stops and when that happens, the analysis will already be too late.

I use to believe art as a small concept. Reserved for few areas such as painting, drawing, sculpture... But Art can be more than physical, it can be a state of mind, how you approach life, how you treat others.

And like physical art, it is nothing until it is presented and can be observed and appreciated. Art is created by both the creator and the observer.

Great piece. Love the pic too. Was that your fathers?

Art never imitates life as they are one and the same.

The photos is mine. I don't have any of my dad's work. One day I will be able to afford the transport for it.

Love the photograph. It makes me feel hidden and protected. Protected from what? I'm not sure. I see the beauty before me but I sort of love being in the dark. I think that most people are afraid to put their own feelings into art because they are actually afraid of their own feelings.

afraid to put their own feelings into art because they are actually afraid of their own feelings.

The real ones at least.

you're right. There are many people who are dedicated to analyze and judge any work without enjoying its essence, without appreciating what is in front. They just spend time thinking about why it was done in such a way and not in another way ... but it was done that way ... and that way you have to appreciate it and enjoy it.

Art is as complex as we want, Nothing better than surrender to contemplate each line in a painting and see the mixture of colors, close your eyes and feel the smell and those that make us feel ... unfortunately many times we deprive ourselves of discovering and to live art, and the worst is when we limit a child or another being, the world does not need juries, the world needs people who appreciate, people who believe.

there is art in maths and engineering, teaching and child care. people like to limit themselves.

Aaah this is like music to my ears, you’ve put me in my happy place. Absolutely the ‘art’ which I think is a generally under valued term, is what you let yourself see :)

most limit it to a hand skill without seeing it in all that is created so if they don't have the hand skill, they think they are an able to create.

My abilities as an artist do not exist and my ability to recognize an art is not any better. What I understand about art comes from reading about what others have felt. An artistic piece of work may be a masterpiece or it may be mediocre attempt at greatness............ it is all lost upon a person who doesn't recognizes the arts ability to take a human mind to a journey.

PS: I also feel that sometimes art might flow freely into the mind but in some cases art might actually be an acquired love. Maybe I am wrong but it is how I feel.......

Everyone has the potential of an imagination, some haven't exercised it so much. most choose consumption because it requires no commitment.

Everyone sees art in a different light. An artist piece who enjoys art and isn't just trying to make money will have some meaning. Maybe reminding him/her of happy times or a special time in their lives. I knew an artist who basically shit posted churning out a"painting"every 30 minutes or so. I can't imagine he started out like that and probably didn't enjoy it in the end.

Perhaps it was his commentary on the art industry... :D

He was one of those you see in hotel rooms. Look the same with a splash of different colour. Some were fairly decent but you had to hunt quite hard though.

Beautiful photo, insightful commentary.

That is just a post about the functionality of art, again it dictates the structural code of a life as one we have it because art is life on its own,art again is emotions like you've said,it doesn't matter whether a master in it or not.

beutiful photografy, nice joob brother... :)
