'Cook Strait' small painting - prelude to a larger artwork

This small painting served as a colour study for a large canvas painting. Whilst it's a painting in its own right, they are very useful for knowing the road ahead.

'Cook Strait', 8" x 10", oil on wooden panel.

This painting was the prelude to my recent canvas painting 'Cook Strait' as seen in the speeded up video below.

It was very helpful to refer to the small painting whilst painting the final piece as seen below. As you can see I made a lot of changes in the end to the final painting but the composition is much the same.

Small painting / colour studies are great to do because you can make your mistake before starting a larger piece...and they make great little paintings.

Wow, this looks simply beautiful.
Must have taken a lot of time to make it so detailed and spot on. I can just imagine this during a stormy sea.

Wonderful work. I particularly like the wave that catches the light before crashing down. It perfectly captures the whole essence of the power of the ocean.
