Making and presenting a symbolic portrait for my mum's 50th birthday
It's all about family this weekend as my mum turns 50, and of course I made a commemorative portrait for her. Fifty years they say is the golden anniversary, that inspired the plaque-like design I used for the portrait. I'd like to share the process and presentation here as usual, but firstly let me drop a little clip, if you care for such, showing how we woke her up to the sound of music! She never expected it, what a beautiful surprise!
Now to the art proper...
I was thinking of so many ways to symbolize this portait, that delayed me for days till it was almost too late, just three days before her birthday. I thought of embedding her face in the number 50, putting several 50s in the background, replacing what should be her cloth with a cubical 50 and so many other crazy ideas.
Just at the nick of time I concluded on this design, making her a crest resting on an award plaque! Now, with little time left, I knew I had to be drawing the whole time to meet up with presenting the portrait on her birthday (Thursday 2nd August) and that exactly I did! I started shading Monday evening...I was able to finish the hat before I slept at about 12:30am, I didn't want to work late so I would be fresh for Tuesday 😊.
I woke up sharp on Tuesday as planned and got back to work at about 9am after chores and breakfast. Believe me when I tell you, spare a few hours for chores and eating, I was drawing all day and all night till 4:30 am! I woke up again 9am Wednesday morning and drew from 11am till 5pm when I finally finished and went to get the work framed. That's the sacrifice you make when you're not willing to compromise the quality of your work (after starting late 😂😂)
It wasn't until this point that I thought of making the plaque golden and giving it a sculpture-like look. I was so happy when it happened. That was the art, the uniqueness I was looking for.
And finally...
I also included a message on the plaque which says "To us, you have always been golden. It just became official today 2nd of August 2018"
I'm glad both my parents (my mum especially), my siblings and other well wishers present really loved the drawing. You can see that in this little presentation clip👇.
