Character Redesign: Finrir

in #art8 years ago (edited)

I had been wanting to redesign Finrir, one of my cast members from one of my personal favorite stories I’d thought up, ever since I redesigned Arble (the main character of said story) a ways back. Not totally sure this is what I'm going to stick with for Finrir, but it's definitely an improvement.

This is Arble's new look:

I'm figuring on redoing the whole story, but I'm not sure how much is changing. I never did manage to actually show much of the original story before, but anyway.

Finrir is from a sort of ice wolf clan. I'm going to have to think of a better name for it later on.

Finrir's name comes from Norse mythology, so I looked up some Norse warriors, but all that fur and thick clothing which makes a lot of sense from the perspective of a human who needs to keep warm in a frigid wasteland, doooooesn't really make sense from the perspective of a wolf guy with ice powers that kinda causes his kind to live in a frigid wasteland because their powers kinda cause that.

Like

If they weren't just naturally acclimated to the cold, they'd all die as little puppy babies before their ancestors developed enough to know how to make proper heat and shelter and whatnot.

Or maybe they wouldn't, idk. That's just my logic on it.

Anyway, also have a bit of Celtic inspirations, mostly in the tattoo on his shoulder.

As with other features, Finrir's ears are folded down to be visually similar to the crook in Arble's tail. It's also sort of symbolic, as to indicate being underdeveloped, as like a puppy. It was a design choice even in his original design, though before his ears stood up, but were bent at the top, as if they were sort of deformed like Arble's tail. But the ears never looked right when I drew them before, so I may just leave them as simple droopy ears. It's something to think about.

Also, I played around a little with the idea of giving him a different haircut, but wound up building off of that to make a design for his dad.

Finrir's looks are based a bit around collies, shepards, and huskies. Canis (his father) does sort of look like a lion, so while he should thematically look like a wolf, it does fit his personality rather well.

Finrir also had a dog collar in his old design. I'm going back and forth on whether to keep it in. Seems a bit odd here, but I don't know.

It's still in progress, regardless.

Oh, almost forgot to mention... As a part of the story's revamp, Arble and Finrir actually have animal forms. If I was being logical, I'd probably make these guys more anthropomorphic, like Bugs Bunny or whatever, but I like the "human with animal ears and tail" way of doing it, even if it isn't incredibly creative. Anyway, I really like playing with the clothes and hair, and making them match up with their respective animals and personalities, even if it did come to bite me in the butt when I tried to make a small cat form for Arble LOL.

I didn't realize it was a trend lol. Just knew the old designs were lacking because the story outgrew them. I'm glad you like the idea. ^_^)
