An artwork develops – All the sordid details by Crayven Part I [EN/DE]
Ich möchte euch ein weiteres Mal die Entstehung eines Artworks vorstellen. Ich werde zwei Posts daraus machen, euch zuerst die Band vorstellen und ein wenig über das Logo-Design reden. Im nächsten Teil möchte ich euch das Album-Artwork vorstellen, das sehr viel Spaß und Arbeit gemacht hat.
Lisa, a friend of mine and a great singer asked me end of 2014 to do a Logo and the debut album artwork for them. When I started to work with that Band – Crayven – their name was still Crave. I did a little research and found too many bands using the same name, so we set up a crisis talk and permutated the name until every member was pleased.
So here we go, let me introduce Crayven: A very likable band with the members (back then): Lisa - Vocals and violine, Cherry – the bass lady, G – Guitars & keys and Christoph – drums. Christoph owns the heavy metal production studio Iguana Studios in South Germany (of course he produced the album). Crayven plays very modern and clean female fronted New Metal who has the potential to get big, in my opinion. On the other hand, they´re all very smart, have lots of interests and responsibilities and are very busy in their normal lifes, so I don´t know what happens further.
Lisa, eine Freundin von mir und eine wunderbare Sängerin, fragte mich Ende 2014, ob ich für ihre Band ein Logo und das Artwork für das Debut-Album gestalten könnte. Als ich begann mit der Band – Crayven - zu arbeiten, hieß sie noch Crave. Nach kurzer Recherche fiel mir aber auf, dass es schon sehr viele Bands gibt, die genau diesen Namen tragen. Wir führten ein Krisengespräch und haben den Namen hin und her geändert, bis jeder zufrieden war.
Also lasst mich vorstellen: Crayven – eine sehr sympathische Band mit den (damaligen) Mitgliedern: Lisa (Gesang und Geige), Cherry (die Frau am Bass), G (Gitarren & Keys) und Christoph an den Drums. Christoph ist der Inhaber eines bekannten Metal Produktionsstudios in Süddeutschland namens Iguana Studios. Natürlich hat er auch dieses Album produziert :) Crayven spielt sehr modernen und cleanen New Metal mit starker Frontfrau. Die Band hat meiner Meinung viel Potential groß zu werden. Auf der anderen Seite sind alle Mitglieder sehr clever, haben viel um die Ohren und sind schwer beschäftigt in ihrem normalen Leben, daher weiß ich nicht, wie es weitergehen wird.
So fing es jedenfalls an: Ich zeichnete von Hand das Logo, das ich im Hinterkopf hatte, inspiriert von der Musik und dem Gefühl, das die Musik und die Charaktere der Mitglieder bei mir auslösten. Das Einzige, worum mich die Band bat im Hinterkopf zu behalten, war das Bandlogo von „Evanescence“, wenn ihr euch an sie erinnert. Außerdem versuchte ich es sehr elegant und clean zu gestalten. Mit der Zeichnung als Grundlage habe ich das Vektor-Design in Illustrator als Pfade gebaut.
As mentioned before, there was the name change. That was very challenging, because that happened AFTER I was ready with the first draft. So I struggled a lot with adding the new characters and still find a well balanced look. Finally they got the logo they liked!
Next time I´m going to write about the photoshooting with the band and the creation of the album artwork!Wie zuvor erwähnt, gab es diese Namensänderung. Für mich eine große Herausforderung, denn diese Änderung kam, nachdem ich mit meinem ersten Entwurf fertig war. Ich hatte im Nachhinein ziemlich zu kämpfen, die zusätzlichen Buchstaben hinzuzufügen und trotzdem einen ausgewogenen Look beizubehalten. Letztendlich haben sie ein Logo bekommen, mit dem alle sehr zufrieden waren.
Nächstes Mal berichte ich vom Photoshooting mit der Band und der Erstellung des Album-Layouts!

Yes, it´s a lot of work and there are many things you have consider while creating (is it invertable, how does it look on different media, can it be printed very small, very big, does it represent the product it stands for...). Thank you so much, I´m glad you like it!
