Fashion Flashback July 1939: Cassandre for Harper's Bazaar

in #art7 years ago (edited)

Pleats please! Below is a Harper's Bazaar magazine cover from July 1939 from my personal collection. The cover illustration was created by A.M. Cassandre the nome de plume of Adolphe Mouron one of the most innovative commercial artists from the first half of the 20th Century. In France, he was well known for his designs of travel posters, Dubonnet and a large variety of other clever ads. In the late 1930s he moved to New York and worked on several projects for American companies. The Harper's Bazaar covers are one of those projects. His color palette and shading are designed to catch the eye and are part of the reason for his great success. If you are interested in Cassandre please let me know I will post more work from the collection. Steemit!
