In 2018, the annual Chinese New Year falls on February 16th. It is a day that kicks off a week of pride, merry and celebration within china and well around Asia. The date is not fixed like that of the New Year celebrated in most western countries which is on the December 31st but it is pinned on the date of the new moon, usually between the 21st of January and 20th of February. This year, it is the year of the dog, In reference to the Chinese astrology horoscope.

Every aspect about the celebration seems to vary year on year, inclusive of the date and theme of the celebration but one thing is certainly sure, the day is always painted in red. Here comes the Red lantern, it’s so visibly decorated on all corners of the country and most of Asia within this celebration period. Most Chinese living in Europe, expatriates, students and merchants in Africa and the Americas take out ample time off their schedule to make sure their color on the special day reflects the mood and event ongoing in their mother land.

In Chinese culture, the red color is a symbol of the booming life and prosperous businesses. Hence the red lantern symbolizes the early Chinese wisdom and enlightenment which to today have morphed and taking form, making the nation’s economy of a gargantuan bemolth, gazed upon by many other nations. The lamps are always hung on important festivals such as the Lantern festival, National Day, Chinese New Year. It is also always visible along main streets and in national parks.

Unfortunately, travel and business in Asia during the celebration can be pricey and frustrating as accommodations fills up quickly and rockets high in price and transportation services becomes limited. If you have plans to visit any of the major cities during the fourth approaching New year celebrations, plan well in advance and lastly don’t forget buy some lanterns and red spray to immense yourself into the spirit of the new year.
