Splashes of Spring colour
Centaurea montana -great blue-bottle
This perennial cornflower makes a bold statement in the springtime garden. Its unusual petal shapes and soft greyish-green leaves add interest to the green borders. Rich blues and purples are sprayed out from its red center, a bullseye for any bee.
Using watercolours and a variety of brushes and tools I built up energetic splashes of colour to represent the movement of the plants. I did this in two stages, allowing the first stage to dry and to mask off areas of white and lighter colours that I wanted to maintain.

Lovely photos and watercolors - I love Centaurea, they're so easy to grow and have a long blooming season here in California. :)
The colours are pretty, they come up every year- even if I try to remove them from a border they seem to find a way to grow back!

I try to paint 'En plein air' and follow the example of Impressionists like Monet and paint outdoors as much as possible.
There is no better inspiration than that, but you have to recognize that you have to have the gift in your hands to translate that impiracion in the canvas and that is what I admire of you.
