Tenement

I'm pleased to be sharing with you another drawing I have created for Doug Karr's novel Dwelling. I have titled the following piece 'Tenement', an ink drawing inspired by chapter 2 of the novel.

Standing in his eight-foot studio share, Dorian defocused his eyes at the blackened tenement painted on his canvas. The building began to lose shape, fogging out in a pixelated haze.

He could almost stand the giant canvas when it was this blurry, the image beyond recognition.

Almost.

The process of creating 'Tenement'

I researched New York tenement buildings to get an idea of the style of architecture I was drawing. I began creating the image by sketching out the outline of tenement block in pencil. I then masked off areas I wanted to keep white with tape.

The next stage was to apply ink washes over the paper, building up sections of dark tones. Once the ink washes were dry I could start to add some lines using a dip pen and black ink.

I didn't add too much detail to the drawing, the piece needed to represent an unfinished, slightly blurred, painting.

The building began to lose shape, fogging out in a pixelated haze.

What a beautiful project, my compliments! I love how you play with transparency and brush strokes in this post! Very well crafted.

I'm enjoying this project @serste... plus I like the challenge of creating an ink drawing that looks like an unfinished and slightly blurry painting, that the artist in the novel wants to destroy.

Lately, after four years of almost all digital works, I'm feeling the urge to have my hands dirty again. I used to experiment a lot with techniques, but now my budget and time are limited. Thank you for keeping sharing your works with different media, it's a real inspiration to me.

Thank you for the upvote :D

I like what you’ve done here. I’ve used in in the past alway disappointed when a blob of it falls onto my piece and bam! All that work for nothin. I hate when that happens. Your very talented with this style.

Thank you - yes dip pens can be a challenge, but i prefer the equality of line for this type of drawing.

I'm happy that here at steemit we have a great artist like you @opheliafu. Who is an excellent example to follow for many of us, who start on the path of art.

greetings apheliafu, I'm new here for the community of steemit, and I was delighted with your work, I had not seen someone who drew in so many different ways, I like to draw but it would be wonderful to have your talent ... I'm following you to continue marveling with your art ;-)
