A grain of truth

Today, I'm showing you the process of how I created 'Maize', an illustration for Chapter Twelve of Doug Karr's amazing novel Dwelling.

The smell of his sweat brought him back to Mangochi, tilling the soil of his father's plot before the season's maize planting. Back when he found pleasure in work. Before the generous societies of the West brought his people hybrid seeds.

The process of creating 'Maize'

March1835.jpg

The first stage to making 'Maize' was to rough up the paper using a cheese grater and then to score into it with a scalpel. I then soaked the base of the paper in ink and water, allowing the ink to soak into the score marks.

The image of the maize was sketched out in pencil, then black lines were added using a dip pen and drawing ink. To create a range of tones, layers of ink and water were added with a brush.

The first year's maze yield had been beyond all expectation. The tribal chiefs had thrown celebrations, the Guli-wan-kulu had danced in their rags and frightful masks. Entire villages erupted with festivities.

Ink on paper

He wondered if his parents would ever have planted something named 'Terminator Seeds,' into their land, their family heritage, if their benevolent patrons had printed the product's true name on the woven plastic sacks.

Yes - i just have to remember to wash the grater before making cheese on toast!

Not only is your cheese grating ingenious, but the experience or reading back through after I posted then finding the maise and then as you scroll down it becomes this ashen bleeding ground was like the most poetic reveal I can imagine, and so perfectly in line with Ndusen’s mental state in the chapter. Mind blown.

Fantastic work as always @Ophelilafu. Lol, what did you think of the new addition to our Dada conversation? Looks like Noddy made an appearance...

Enjoying the sunshine.

The first stage of the artwork itself can be a good minimalistic art to me already.

Yes- the paper is rather lovely in that state.
