Blocks- tiny paintings

Blocks of colour

I was driving past blocks of relatively new apartments yesterday. The paintwork was an array of bright colours, each building block had a slightly different colour scheme. I imagined the architect's idea was to create these pure blocks of colour that added interest plus broke up the scale of the buildings.

What I found more interesting than this original intention was the way that in so little time the new inhabitants had started to leave their own mark on the design of the buildings. A new array of shapes were spreading over these minimalistic blocks of colour. Circular satellite dishes, washing lines, TV aerials, and bamboo screening strung across glass balconies. The practicalities of living had quickly taken over the original aesthetics of the building, creating its own unique design.

Three months ago I posted a piece called Tiny tree a super tiny painting made on a offcut of discarded mountboard.

The last couple of weeks I've been busy cutting a couple of dozen drawing boards out of hardboard to use in my drawing workshops. With all this cutting inevitably comes offcuts, but I'm not one to throw away potential painting surfaces! This week I've been growing the display of tiny paintings that I have up on my walls. Continuing with the lopsided theme I started with 'Tiny Tree', I've kept those edges rough and wonky!

My super tiny wonky painting collection continues to grow!

The maestro is at it again, can't wait till this project is done to view it boss.

It will never be finished @oluwoleolaide, there will always be new offcuts to paint on!

Sweet. Nice artwork. Very creative :-)

😀 Thank you! 🎨

Beautiful paintwork

Glad you like it @mgibson!

It's almost as if the really vibrant colours bleed out of the tiny boards onto the white around them. Reminds of tiny Rothkoesque colour field paintings. Love your stuff keep up the good work.

I have spent many hours sat in galleries staring at Rothko paintings... so an influence is highly likely! That is a great compliment, thank you.

I worked in the royal academy of art in london and looked after many pieces whilst there the Rothko pieces always interested me and I abused the fact that I could have the whole gallery to myself for hours at a time. To really appreciate them you need to almost go inside the painting. I found your paintings did that pushing the colours out. Like I said great work. They would make great t shirt designs also.

Exciting- what a great job to have had! I would spend a lot of time with The Seagram Murals at the Tate, I never went to London without spending a few hours there.

I love the Tate my art teacher organised trips there regularly, installing a love for art that is still with me now. 30 years later my art teacher found me on Facebook and I got to thank her for the seed she planted and got to tell her how it has effected my life. True teachers change your life forever I'm very lucky to have had a few lovely teachers and also got the chance to thank them.
