Malfatti Glass - Functional Vessels by Daniel Spitzer and Jill Reynolds

I think functional objects can be seen as quite boring or tedious, especially in today's world where people generally need to be entertained on a consistent basis. For me it's all in the details, and that's where handmade functional ware really excites me. When you see those nice touches from the maker that gives objects warmth and harmony, as well as drawing you in to them and making you feel present in that moment.

That's exactly what I thought of when I came across this tableware by Ten Willow Studio, which consists of Daniel Spitzer and Jill Reynolds. Daniel is a master glassblower and formerly a member of American glass sculptor Dale Chihuly's team. Jill is an award-winning visual artist known for her innovative use of flameworked glass. This particular collection goes under the name of Malfatti, which is an Italian word meaning 'misshapen'.

Each Malfatti object is uniqued shaped using hand tools, as well as other simple glassblowing techniques. Made from borosilicate glass, the same material used to make laboratory ware, they're surprisingly strong and durable. I'm especially drawn to the way that these have been manipulated, you can almost see movement in these pieces even though they're static. I think they would be pieces that people would be drawn to because of their tactile qualities. I've placed a few photos here for your to admire but I'd also recommend a look at their portfolio and shop page, this whole collection can be purchased online. Enjoy.
