You may be surprised to hear that it's relatively hard to find designers who are committed to incorporating craft in to their design process. Many use it as a sort of gimmick to promote a product, but I've been particularly impressed with Catherine Aitken and her devotion to the creative process in general.

The Catherine Aitken Studio designs furniture and interior products. Although they don't focus on one material in particular, they have been trying to produce furniture and products that are inspired by hands-on processes. We can see this in the design of the Fade Stool, which involves lengths of cotton cord that are stitched together and then wrapped to a plywood plate and powder-coated steel base.

I like this idea of incorporating more traditional and handmade elements in to a selection of mass-produced products. Not only is it promoting creativity and experimentation within the field of design, it's also pushing craft and trying to endear it to a wider audience. Anyway, here's a few photos from the studio's portfolio, more can be found on their website that's linked below.
