Welcome to another edition of ARTSPIRATION! A little series of mine where I share with you some of the artists that have had a major impact on my own art journey.

*

When people look at my art, one of the most common comments I hear is that it's whimsical. If that's so, then I have Mary Grandpré to thank for that!

"The Four Champions" by M.G.
She is an award-winning illustrator who has drawn for many, many authors of course. But I first knew her as a name on the cover of my all-time favorite series, the Harry Potter books.

Just looking at her illustrations is like experiencing magic itself. A lot of mystery, and yes! so many whimsical details. I don't think the story would have as much impact if Ms. Grandpré had not illustrated the particular editions I read.

My favorite chapter illustration: "The Midnight Duel" by M.G.
She of course, did the illustrations for U.S. Scholastic Books which, back in the early 2000's, were the only editions of the Harry Potter series available in the Philippines (correct me if I'm wrong). These were mostly chapter illustrations in black and white. And while they were marvelous, I didn't know she also made a ton of other FULL-COLORED drawings, some of them unpublished. Ahh, my heart!

More Unpublished Work

Here is a selection of my favorite scenes she illustrated!

Mary GrandPré (born February 13, 1954) is an American illustrator best known for her cover and chapter illustrations of the Harry Potter books in their U.S. editions published by Scholastic. She received a Caldecott Honor citation in 2015 for illustrating Barb Rosenstock's The Noisy Paint Box: The Colors and Sounds of Kandinsky's Abstract Art.

GrandPré, who creates her artwork with paint and pastels, has illustrated more than twenty books and has appeared in gallery exhibitions and periodicals such as The New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, and The Wall Street Journal. source

Sweep Dreams.
She illustrated many others about which I can't go into detail here, but are easily searchable!

The Flying Keys by M.G.

I remember the books were so hard to get then, I'm not sure why. Either because only a few bookstores sold them - or maybe because there were hardly any bookstores in my city when I was growing up?

The Author, in unflattering public school uniform
Anyway.. Back then I was a miserable school girl. I was not interested in learning about Math and Science. I wanted to own a magic wand and go to Hogwarts!

*

Here I am, fully garbed in the standard Philippine public school uniform. Long green skirt, white blouse, white socks and black shoes. I assure you, it was very unflattering to a chibi-esque body like mine.

Reading books like Harry Potter and seeing all the magical illustrations made everyday life like an adventure too! And of course, inspired me to be the artist I am today.

"Magic is Might" indeed, let's toast to that!

That concludes my second ARTSPIRATION post! I will try to feature a different inspirational artist every week. Since it's me we're talking about, it may be later than that. We'll see!

If you you want to see more good art, check out the first ARTSPIRATION article on John Howe.

Do you have an artspiration too? Let me know in the comments below so I can look them up!

Spread the magic! 🎇

Pleased to meet Mary :) It's interesting how we are drawn to certain styles, isn't it? Maybe it's a latent desire to live in a dream world or maybe it's admiration, or what? I'm drawn to powerful people. Nothing whimsical about me but I do I admire people like you Noellese. Somehow I missed your first post in this series. In post3, please could you give a link to it?

Interesting thoughts! For me it's both. It's the desire to escape into a world with more adventure and at the same time it's admiration for people who created those worlds.
Great idea Dee, should have linked the 1st post here. I'll edit my article. Here it is, btw: https://steemit.com/art/@noellesevilla/artspiration-my-art-heroes-or-1-john-howe-or-celebrating-2-art-curations-and-200-followers
