World turtle by Hydra

in #art8 years ago (edited)

Last night was the opening for Miks ei! (why not!), an art exhibition for the whole family. Our artgroup Hydra was invited to participate and create something for this event. Here is our contribution: Maailmankonna, The world turtle*
The turtle itself was was sculpted from insulation foam board. The shell was constructed from pieces of our previous installations that has been recycled in few exhibitions exhibitions. I put some pictures below and a video.

Hydra is a group of six artists all graduates from Lahti Institute of Fine Arts. We have been working together since 2011 since we rented our first shared studio space. The collaborative work brings an interesting arena for clash of ideas and opportunities for all sort of experimental projects we would not do in our individual careers.

A lot of our work as a group consists of miniature sculptures placed on a larger installation, but we have also done things like performance art.

Hope you enjoy these pictures and video. If you happen to be in the Lahti region you are welcome to visit. Beside our work there are works from other amazing artists: Eeva Kaisa Jauhiainen, Miss Kompro, Ihana Havo, Merja Puustinen & Andy Best.
the exhibtion free of charge and the it is open on tuesdays and fridays from 9-18, wednesdays and thursdays from 12-18 and saturdays and sundays 12-16.

It looks great. How much time did you invest into this project ? I hope we will see more from hydra.

Thank you.The turtle part we finished in less than a week with pretty long days. The idea was steaming typically for a long time until we got everyone together and pressed on. For the smaller bits made over the years its hard to tell. I'll be posting more from Hydras previous projects soon. There is one here from last summer https://steemit.com/art/@mikkolyytinen/art-show-hydra-go-ti-la-2016

Excellent post, and fascinating work!

Thank you @opheliafu! i wish everyone here could see it in person. it has a funky smell though..

Old acrylic paint?

We've been cherishing this bucket of old house paint that's been frozen and what not. It's full of lumps and very disgusting :D

I love this. Could there be an element of inspiration by Terry Pratchett?

Thank you. Absolutely, for me personally Terry Pratchett has been a big inspiration . Some of us were pushing for a big Pteranodon before the turtle idea was introduced... Though the world turtle is much older myth it all makes a nice connection here to Pratchett with the absurdity of the world.

Fantastic! I've been a Pratchett fan for years.
I like your style @mikkolyytinen keep posting my friend :D

Man, the doll's head was super creepy, but I enjoyed the overall concept. Made me think about Flatland

Thank you. I'm not too familiar with Flatland but I am looking it up now and it seems interesting.
