Octane, my renderer of choice got a little upgrade to the displacement feature. Displacement displaces your 3D geometry based (typically) on a black and white image. White is up, black is down. Most 3D software have tools for generating noise patterns proceduraly. ie by manipulating parameters vs just painting them by hand, but Octane didn't allow for the direct input of procedural noises...UNTIL NOW!
Exciting right???
Well, it is for me. It opens up a lot of possibilities for some cool effects, like dirty asteroids or other things that make more sense.
From that image that looks pretty random you can create a lot of magic.
That's that. Welcome to the Steem portion of this post. Probably what you're here for. So someone commented on one of my comments asking if this was the "Beginning of the End" for Steem, and I replied it's more like the end of the beginning.
Other than maybe like the first year, the "big idea" with Steem has been SMT's. Lot's of stuff happened. Maybe Ned partied a little too hard and forgot a few things, small stuff like a revenue model. Then we got smacked in the face with a brutal bear market. We couldn't afford Ferrari servers anymore and had to get smart with some new optimizations, but here we are! Well on our way to a shiny new hardfork and the prodigal feature, SMT's. It would be more accurate to say it's the START of the beginning.
We all wish it was happening faster, but it is happening. I say, keep posting, keep curating, keep doing whatever it is you like to do on the chain. Unless you like to do things that are bad for the chain, in that case, please stop doing that.

I love displacement maps XD
I hope they're taking so long coz they have something brilliant happening but had more trouble with it than anticipated.
Meanwhile I'm pretty happy with the tokens I completely don't understand but muddle along with anyway :)
Displacement is Octane just got a lot cooler. Basically now you can project the maps, so you can use displacement on objects that don't have any UVs.
Everything here is on a shoestring to zero budget, so it's actually pretty inspiring that as much is getting done as it is.
Here as in Octane or here as in steem?
Getting stuff done on a shoestring budget isn't really that surprising, that's pretty much how most free software and volunteer-based organisations roll right XD
Here as in Steem. I mean a lot of other crypto projects have HUGE budgets. EOS, Tron, etc, but we still have the most useful stuff here even with people fueling their projects mostly on passion.
Big budgets are useful and make a lot of things easier but they're not essential XD
