3D Sketches

I first learned 3D with Maya. Back when it was Alias Wavefront Maya in the long long ago. I'm self taught and no two ways about it, it was hard. This was before the internet was full of training and resources, before youtube, before vimeo, before streaming video was really much of a thing. I read the documentation, and went to the bookstore to buy books about it. Ahh yes back in these days bookstores were a thing too.

Anyway, I'm sounding like an old man here. Point being I though all 3D software was going to be as hard as Maya was to learn so I never really ventured out to other software. Then a few years ago as I was trying to do more complex motion design work and constantly frustrated with how difficult some things were to do in Maya, I finally made the leap and started learning Cinema 4D.

Really wish I hadn't waited so long. Cinema was so much easier than Maya. I'm also not missing the fact that I learned all the fundamentals of 3D with Maya so I already knew what everything was when learning Cinema, but beyond that it just makes a lot more sense for a lot of things. I know Maya is the best for a large production because it's a great pipeline tool, but for an individual artist Cinema is great.

One of the things I love about it is the sort of stuff I'm showing you now. I can open Cinema and just "sketch" with the tools there and make something that looks cool in a few hours or even a few minutes. Combined with a few plugins, in my case primarily X-Particles and Octane Render, it becomes an incredibly powerful, fast, and user friendly tool for making cool stuff.

Whatever this is looks dope..are these stills from a live animation?

Thanks @wolfnworbeikood! Some of them are animated, but most I just made to create a nice still image. These are the sorts of things I do for fun in 3D so that when a job comes along I've been in the lab experimenting and hopefully have something I can use for professional work.

Seems like some technical shit.. Ive always been a fan of visual art... Maybe oneday ill dive into the craft myself... Your good at what you do man.. Everything i see from you is quality

I appreciate it :) Yea all bs aside, it is honestly a bit technical, but once you get past that learning curve it's really fun. I think maybe I'll do a video walk through one of these days to demystify what goes into some of this stuff. That would probably make an interesting post.

Sure your righr... Ill be looking forward to it

Stunning work. I started out 3D with trueSpace, then moved onto Softimage. I eventually realized I was a necrophiliac with 3D software and now I'm with a fork of Blender called Bforaritsts. Glad to see you master Cinema4D. That software never ceases to amaze me and the work you can do with it quickly.

Thanks @trinumedia! There's still some people clinging on to Softimage. It still works. Also not really into Blender so I don't know about the forks, but I know regular Blender is super powerful now, and yes, Cinema makes 3D really fun.

some of this looks like stuff i would see at SFO hanging from the ceiling. Only .. cooler. I love the city.

Sometimes you just gotta let your inner modern artist out man :)

very nice. always wanted to learn 3D but the tools are hard. I dabbled with 3D Studio 1.0 throught 3D Studio 3.0 (all DOS based I think) . The next time i attempted was 3D Studio Max 1.0 and was completely lost.

even the 3D functionality in Photoshp is lost to me.

Thanks @sinlg! Yea, the learning curve is pretty steep and pretty technical, but over the top of that hill...good times :)
