Spook - entry for artexplosion 2

in #art7 years ago (edited)

My entry for @juliakponsford's #artexplosion contest. With the theme being 'phantoms', I couldn't resist posting this painting:

"Spook", oils on canvas, 40x60cm (16x24inch)

It is a painting from 2016, and if I find time, I will enter another (made-for-the-contest) painting before the deadline.

The 'Spook' itself has glow-in-the-dark paint sprayed over it by the way, but I never could manage to photograph it like that proper.

In the summer the glow-in-the-dark adds little value; but in the winter, when it gets dark early, I always enjoyed the painting in a dim-lit part of the house, glowing softly greenish. Not terrifying or horrifying - just a sympathetic phantom lurking about, shimmering and watching you reading a book.

Now there might be an idea for a new series!

This is spooky and love the glow in the dark element. Upvoted.

Thank you @coloringiship, a pity the glow isn't actually visible :/

This is really incredible! Everything is so soft and subtle, I've never seen a painting like this. It does sort of remind me of the illustrations in those Scary Stories to Tell in The Dark books though.

Oh, and good luck, from a fellow comptetitor ;)

Thank you @fungusmonk, will check your entry asap. I'll have to look into those Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, sounds fantastic!

Oh you're not familiar? The books are very well known for their illustrations, here's a few good examples:

The artist's name is Stephen Gammell.

Wow, that is awesome stuff, thanks man! Belgium here, I guess that stuff didn't get through to here :D

Excellent, thanks for the tip!

Can you believe these books were in primary school libraries? They changed the art in recent editions apparently and everyone I know who also read them as a kid was disappointed, including myself.

Blah, all that political correctness.. Kids' imaginations should be stimulated by weird, crazy and wonderful art - not disturbing or terrifying - I'm not saying that, but the drawings above are fantastical and odd. Thanks again, with more time I'll check the books and author proper

these images are awesome, thanks for sharing!!!

I love it. It would go with my story really well. :)

Thanks. Good story, although it wasn't quite what I expected, and I'm left a bit speechless :) Impressed, thank you!

Brilliant choice! So scary the way the arm seems to reaching for you. The face haunts me too.

Thank you very much! :)

Wow!!! Really nice work!!! Very phantagious, is that a word? ha! I love the soft colours and smokey feeling, would love to see it in all of it's glowing glory!!!

Thanks @sourcebird! Phantagious is a word now :) Too bad I never got a pic of the glow in the dark, but maybe I could make a new series by next winter :)

Yes I wish also that I would have better documented my paintings before I sold them, live and learn I guess! Good-luck with the contest and I look forward to your future creations:)

Thank you, good luck to you too! :) Yep, live & learn!

The colors are amazing!! @marty-art

Very cool my friend!

Thank you, my friend! :)

Remember, if you see anything appropriate for The Night Gods (II).., let me know

I like the one I'm using... It suits the story perfectly! And thank you!

Awesome! :)

This is so cool, and glow in the dark as well, thanks for submitting!

Thank you, @juliakponsford, my pleasure, thanks for running the contest!
