Crossing Over – the reluctant wayfarers - Oil Painting
"Crossing Over – the reluctant wayfarers" is one of my major oil paintings for the year. It is inspired by two classic paintings from the late 1800s, "Souls of Acheron", by Adolf Hirémy-Hirschl and "Isle of the Dead", by Arnold Böcklin. It will be the start of a planned series of artworks around the theme of the Underworld and Dante.
You may remember that I did a pencil study for this painting earlier in the year. Because of an extended break from Steemit, it is only now that I've gotten around to posting the painting.
Here's a short explanation of the painting.
Mercury (Hermes) is the god of communication, trade and transport. With the later he as a psychopomp, guided the souls of the dead to banks of the Styx (Acheron) where Charon the ferry man would then collect them and take them to the land of the dead, the Underworld. Naturally many of the dead would rather return to the land of the living and thus plead with him to guide them back. He is unmoved.
The original is now currently touring through Europe in the Magical Dreams exhibition, curated and presented by Bator Gallery.

I like the changes compared to pencil study, a benefit in terms of composition. Kudos

Cheers @longer! I'm not shy of altering a painting if it could be better or not going in the direction I want it. In that sense, I find oil paints rather forgiving, you have the luxury of editing on the fly. The pencil sketches give me the starting point to launch from.
